I'm a bit confused atm
I'm hearing from a lot of people that my latest purchase is now a classic van (1985 Clipper "Purser" Caravan)
I'm getting told a classic van is 30-49yrs old & then 50-79 is vintage & 80+ is a veteran
Can anyone please confirm this for me please
Darren

...I'm getting told a classic van is 30-49yrs old & then 50-79 is vintage & 80+ is a veteran... Darren Hi Darren, I think those dates refer to cars, not caravans. My understanding is that vintage vans are pre 1970 and classic are post 1970 (up to 1980?) but no doubt somebody with the precise info will be along shortly to confirm. Back to cars: I believe pre 1918 is classified as veteran, 1918 - 1930 vintage, and post 1930 is classic. Again, maybe somebody can confirm?

The quick answer is No.
Unlike cars/trucks/vehicles there is no association or club that has ever been created, that sets the age of a caravan as Vintage/Classic etc etc. I spoke with our Qld motoring association about this a couple of months back and there opinion was that each state would need to have a club or association and then they would all have to be members of a national group and it would have to have committee/rules/ regs etc etc and today nothing like that exists.
Now some insurance companies are stating that when a caravan gets to a certain age they will no longer insure it because it is ? but again that is there conditions of insurance not general classification.
Over 10 years ago some people across Australia started buying older caravans and restoring them and/or repairing them and soon "Vintage Caravans" forum was created by Mark Taylor before this there was little information around for people to find out about an old caravan and soon it had a great following of members. Now the rules of that forum are that your caravan must be either in production or built before 31st December 1969.
After a few years the Vintage Forum was getting a lot of people wanting information on caravans from the 1970's and because they fell outside the years of production they were not welcome on that forum so Mark and along with his partner at the time created another forum which was called the "Classic Caravans" forum ie this forum. It's rules are your caravan should be manufactured and/or in production before 31st December 1979 and after 1st January 1970. This is where the original Vintage and Classic Caravans comes from here in Australia.
What has happened is a few things, 1/ The Vintage forum membership grow rapidly plus the Classic also started to as well but no where as quick, and "Google" spiders started listing the forums whenever a search was done for older Australian caravans. 2/ Due to parts no longer being made for some old caravans soon there were replica's being produced and new caravans and teardrops as well made to look old, at the same time some articles started to appear in car club magazines and only some years ago a "Vintage Caravan" magazine was produced. 3/ The rise of Facebook, we have a number of groups open and closed on Facebook who have started doing there own thing with old caravans and they have there own idea's about what is classed as Classic or Vintage.
Today due to rise in interest of older caravans everybody wants to jump on the band wagon and say they have a Vintage or a Classic Caravan and this was spoken about approx. a year ago. Here is a post form a thread about why this forum closes off at 1979 and it make perfect sense See Here If you wish to read the whole thread go HERE
There has been a number of links in different sections of this forum placed to outside websites of people selling late 1980's caravans as "Classic" ! Why because they believe there is a greater market and they will get a better price.
So in short you can say your "Clipper" is anything thing you like but by our forum rules it is not a Classic Caravan.
Cheers
