Hi everyone Just a reminder. I replaced my tyres yesterday as we are going on a short trip soon and thought it prudent to do a bit of prep work. Seems all three of the tyres on the van are 5yrs old or more. Lots of tread, but of course when a tyre is that old the rubber will be breaking down. Yes there are plenty out there that can give stories of running on tyres much older. BUT The tyre places won't fit tyres over 6 years old onto a rim these days. Got to do with safety regulations etc. Nothing spoils a lovely holiday like a blown tyre and realising there is a real chance that the spare will cause issue as well. For under $300 it's peace of mind. Oh and how old are you fire extinguishers? Got to replace these too. If it's over a year old they are recommended to be replaced. $30 each at Bunnings? How much to replace your van? Again, mine are currently five years old, how embarrassment. Cheers Atog

Yes, some places won't fit old tyres now, but there is currently no law against this. Personally I think tyres last longer than this, so I would be looking for a different tyre supplier IMO. Just my 2 cents...

Two indicators of pending Problems with Tyres is to check the Tyre walls for Crazing (walls failing due to perishing) and the other is to check for waves in the walls (walls failing due to de-lamination).

We were away for the weekend with our caravan club. A friend showed me his tyre, the tread started to separate from the casing exposing wire. The tyre had heaps and heaps of thread on it, they were 8 years+ old. Somewhere along the way I have read that you should replace your trailer tyres at 8 years of age.. Must agree with atog.. its cheap insurance. ooh yeah 'check ya nuts too'
