I've arrived in Lightning Ridge for the long weekend. I think I've found the caravan equivalent of the elephants graveyard. Everywhere you look there are old caravans of all shapes and sizes. Not many vans newer than 2000 and lots of early stuff - even a couple of bondwood vans. Outside of town, every block seems to have 2 or 3 vans (not many permanent 'houses' on the prospecting blocks). Blocks are 50M x 50M so that means a lot of blocks and a shed load of caravans. A casual question to the tour guide reveals that not much in the 'Ridge ever leaves or gets sold once it's here. There's cars, trucks, buses (single and double deckers)and mining equipment everywhere - on town blocks as well as the out of town blocks. I'll go for a drive when the wind dies down and take a couple of photos. With the wind, dust is really bad.

4 different car door tours - Red, Yellow, Green and Blue. We did an organised tour first so I'd know where to go back later. We're staying at the Opal Caravan Park near the Artesian Bore Baths. Bloody rough 'roads' though and you need to keep track of the doors so you don't get off the road and into someones driveway. There are tracks everywhere. I've got a few caravan photos from the road without going on private property. Even from the road you need to be careful walking from the road - there are mine shafts everywhere (but they do have mesh over the open hole) and some very nasty spikey cactus things looking to steak your boots. There are literally hunderds of caravans here - mostly Viscount and Millard but there heaps of others where the logo is gone so I don't know what they are. When you look from the road, there are more vans that you can't get a decent photo because they are obscured or behind something. I'll load them up next week.

Mel & Sue are fun to be entertained by. The outback pubs have some great meals.. For the last couple of years we have stayed at the Opal for a week or more..
