The British......." ROYALE" There have been a few of these ROYALE caravans imported into Australia, this sales brochure was supplied by a person who built these vans in England back in the early 60's, This person received a call ( about 10 years ago) from a person in Perth who intended to purchase a ROYALE which was located in Western Australia, Upon inspection and checking his work records he found that he had actually built that particular caravan in England 44 years ago. The present location of this ROYALE is unknown. kiwijim

American AirstreamIn the 1970 Sydney Caravan Show there was a 30ft Airstream on display. A newspaper article at the time said: "America is often regarded as being the leader in car and caravan design. But after seeing the "Rolls Royce" of American vans, the 30ft Airstream International Land Yacht, you will wonder whether we are behind - or ahead - in styling. The van is odd-shaped by our standards, but would be ideal for towing. Its aerodynamic shape resembles an aeroplane, rather than a caravan. The van, costing $19000 new, was imported by an American engineer. It was involved in an accident and subsequently sold to a Sydney dealer. Despite its length, it is only a two-berth van, with two single beds. But the interior is something that has to be seen to be believed. It is fitted with air-conditioning, a furnace oil heater, a four-burner stove, a full-size oven, a 6 cu.ft refrigerator, a lounge area, a dining area, and a good-size kitchen with plenty of cupboard space. The galley unit has a twin bowl sink. There's a bath and shower with hot and cold water, and a toilet in the back of the van, and a movie-star make-up mirror. Even though it offers luxurious comfort, when compared with our 30ft self-contained vans at $6000, it's a bit on the pricey side."Here is a photo of the Airstream... Wonder whatever happened to this Airstream?? [Ref: SH1970 05 24 76]

MY 17' ENGLISH CARLIGHT CONTINENTAL, has a door on both sides of the van, for when you tour the continent old chap.............still under restoration. To the best of my knowledge......it's the only one in Australia. I took these photos about 2 years ago, when I picked it up. Will start a separate thread, WHEN I start restoring it it!!!!!!

G.day Humps, That Carlight Continental of yours looks great, ;D ;D They certainly have a design of their own, and I love the very pleasant open air feeling that it has from the inside, plenty of large open windows, there's no claustrophobic feeling when inside the English vans. Has your van got a built-in rest room ? ;D how about some more photo's of the interior, the cooker and fridge plus sleeping accommodation would be good to see ? ;D Also some info on the running gear, suspension, brakes, lighting, type of fridge, etc etc etc. ;D Your Carlight will look great when restored, although I can't see a heck of a lot that requires fixing at the present, Can't wait for the forums first " NATIONAL GET- TOGETHER" (what ever year that might be) I look forward to seeing your van personally (hopefully in the near future). Cheers and Beers kiwijim ;D

The Carlight has a rear rest room beside the kitchen area. There is no stove or fridge unfortunately, but the hot water system is still there. Being a continental it has doors on both sides and the gas heater/clothes dryer. It has a cocktail cabinet too! Also there is a folding wardrobe door of three pieces which divides the sleeping area from the rest, but typically "pommie" the bed is the front lounge in the photo....although another double one can be made from the dining area. The layout is very "Geistish"....the woodwork and workmanship is incredible. Look forward to seeing you when you come over this way. Regards.....Humps.

G'day saltbush,
Where are you located? I couldn't find anything on the internet about old Cambrige (or even Cambridge) caravans. How old do you think the van is that you've got?
cheers, Al.

Hi saltbush, Could be an Aussie Cambridge, they were made to be an Aus version of a NZ Crusader. They had furniture that had louvre doors and looked like it came out of a home, not a caravan.Front windows were large and back window was larger and fixed, had an Explair fan on wall over stove.I will know for real if you put up a photo to check out. Cheers hughdeani
