Hi There,we have just been given a old Franklin as a project. It's half renovated and I have no idea what year or model it could be, haven't had any luck finding the same shape on google etc, it actually shape wise looks more like the Viscounts from the 70's. The Chassis number is SMM9271. It's a single axle 18 or 19 ft. Kitchen in front, bunk (fold up) over right wheel opposite dinette, double bed nth/sth at rear. Any ideas as to the year/model?

G'day noidea, and welcome to the forum! Chassis number SMM9271 is certainly not typical of the Franklin numbers, nor is it typical of the Viscounts. I've never seen a chassis number like that before, so it's a mystery to me. Usually you'll see only one or two letters plus some numbers, so to have three letters is certainly unusual. Best you try and post a photo of the van and we'll see if anyone can identify it. cheers, Al.

They have got the Chassis number wrong on the rego papers I suspect. When I looked, the above number is stamped on the coupling. I believe the number on the pic would be the real chassis number. Still waiting on the previous owner to give me a copy of the old rego papers for more detail. It's all covered up with tarps at the moment as it was given to us with all the original external cladding removed and partially replace so pics will have to wait. Does this new number help shed any light? shapewise it seems to be more like the 1970's Viscounts (the ones with the windows on the front corners) Attachments:

Am I reading your photo correctly to say the number is G271? That still doesn't relate to a Viscount number, nor a Franklin. I can't think of any brands that had chassis numbers starting with the letter 'G', so we might have to wait until you can post some photos so we can get a better idea of what the van looks like.
cheers, Al.

Yep I couldn't quite work out if that first one is a G or a 9, will post some pics when I unwrap it. I'll check the old windows which are still sitting loose in it for stickers etc too
Cheers Brooke

I posted further back on this thread trying to identify the van we have been given but the numbers on the chassis didn't seem to be anything Franklin. Here's a couple of pics of the van as we received it, the rego papers say 1974 Franklin

Here's a couple of pics of the van as we received it, the rego papers say 1974 Franklin Hi no idea, You're right,it's not a Franklin! Your van was made by KCB caravans in Melbourne in about 1976 or77. They were also sold under different dealer names, but never Franklin. They had lots of Amber plastic bottle glass wall partitions and sliding overhead cupboard doors(very trendy in their day!) The company didn't last very long,so not many of these vans have survived. Good luck with your Reno! Cheers hughdeani
