This thread is for trying to make the official "where do we live"thread clean & a bit more informative, also i can update my own posts (edit) without post whoreing or detracting from any original posts What i was going to do is list folks Caravans against the list & was hoping for input about wether it was an ongoing project or was being used to tour around etc. Example atefooterz - Nor West Sydney 16`Franklin Arrow - ongoing caretaking, living in it & travel anexistingmember - Badgerys Creek - 22 Viscount ace - `rebuit 2013 -exploring the top end annutherone - Goosberry Heights - 12` ACT camper - 2014 starting to fix up & hoping to improve things alsotwo - Jaccaranda Lake - 16`Viscount- 2013 re building from the ground up. beenthere- Sydney - 19`Viscount Supreme- reno in 2012 exploring WA & NT in between Grandkids & other projects. ________________________ What i am hoping for is those names that are just on there will relate to success or folks who may just be worth a post about if they have finished off a similar project. Remember that when travelling looking around here will become less frequent however some lurk and from what i have seen we seem to get groups that are fixing, making contact with others at that time then moving on, we might like to get some longer term action happening, as can be seen around here and especially with the Vintage Van guys, many who offer advice & or moderate on this site. Classic Caravans is our scene and forming an ongoing Australia wide community is the aim i think, the way forwards is of course up to those motivated to do things and as time is precious not everyone can do the hard yards BUT those with time can help inspire those to book a slot for some action & good fun. History is after all what is remembered from yesterday onwards... best to make it memorable by doing something worth chatting about today.

Interesting....
From the short time I have been a member (not including 2010/1) I can see what you are aiming at. I have noticed that a lot of people join asking for info on there van, most often, date of build and very few do anything more then that. I think some people are buying classis vans because of tight cash flows not because they are actually interested in owning an older van but the "van" falls within there price range.
Some of the long time members are on the vintage van site more then here but that is maybe because it is more active with topic's other then people doing repairs or other reasons. When we first saw a caravan we like back in late 2010, I only found this forum but doing a name search and it came up, this is what happens 95% of the time. I think the original mods have changed or left and the forum just moves along as is.
I will continue with my rebuild and restore and hope to past along what I learn along the way, but when you require information on any particular item/part/section of vanI have found that other commercial website have better up to date info or you need to go through pages in the search section and the info may still be out of date.
Cheers

Exactly, so any links to up to date found products posted in your own thread page helps that process, i too became a classic owner on price & budget, searched & found the vintage site then after reading the Franklin history, discovered it belonged here. All forums are transitory in nature and popularity so it is always up to the current active types to create the vibe and legacy that they want. I know from the classic car scene, back in the day (Rover & Humber) the real divisions & interests of the restorer versus the modern marque owner, let alone someone who wanted to put mags and a doof doof stereo in one! This Classic scene is really temporary as time soon passes and allows for the general population to consider these as vintage vans, after a while. It is up to us the preserve the integrity of the Current Classic era style without stopping or looking down on others for creating cost effective liveable vans to suit their family and pocket deepness.

Well there you go, I was the opposite as I wanted something to work on and repair trying to keep whatever I could original but from what I have read and learnt that is not possible with older vans, ie stoves and fridges are no longer available in size or way they work. I could have easily spent 5+ grand on something younger and usable straight away but I enjoy the journey just as much as the destination. I was thinking that when I get our van into a better condition and back on the road/wheels I will try and get either a SE Qld or a Brisbane get to together, happening and maybe see if other members want to meet up and go to the Brisbane Caravan and camping show etc.
Some other people I know who are into classic cars are getting into classic van's but they want the look so it is cleaned up inside and out and it doesn't matter if things don't work but they have to look the "look" and they tow them to shows or rallies etc.
It is interesting in how forums move and change with time, I was a member of a "off road" camper trailer forum, even thou I owned an on road model but there is no on road camper trailer forum ! Some thought it was not the place for on road campers but over time others joined and we were a accepted but then some of the mods and long time members sold there campers and upgraded to pop top caravans ie like Jayco and Windor and other members are building tear drop campers/vans. So that forum has under gone a major identity crisis but is still very popular and I still use that forum while looking for info as I repair "Wichway".
What I find strange, is how many members the vintage forum has and how active it is, if this forum was half as active it would be good
There you go that fill in 45 min's on a Saturday afternoon Cheers

A great example of how things are, what i see, is that the VV scene is all systems go and very esblished, a lot in part to the vintage car scene as tow/ show tugs, i would imagine from reading threads. I had my first up close look at a tear drop at the Catalina Festival recently, it was towed by an old Chevy sidevalve 3 ton ute thingy, great device for show and tell but i could not see a bum like me living in one, or finding a life partner prepared to do so if i did, a few women so far have just given a grunt at the 16 foot van lol! I feel that this forum should skew younger and be more creative than the VV site as more folks real;ise that if you want something good and cheap plus the long term bonus of show & tell around campfires to sterile white box owners. I am planning on moving up QLD way after Xmas as hopefully i can get some shed space at or near my mates place near Maroochiedoor, i think that is where he is on the Sunshine Coast. One of the first threads i ever clicked on here was the meet up one and jolly sad to see what did not happen, If i was a bit or a lot more cashed up i would be up and down the East Coast in an instant to tag along for camping, fishing and of course the 1 or 2 coldies. In my last adventures i was an innaugural part of a wooden boat scene, we tried to get the 1845 to 1912 era up as that was so unique but the guys ended up reinventing history with late to middle 50/60s things that i suppose reminded them of their youth! Sadly due to the light Cedar & Ash construction with copper nails there is very little original remaining and none useable so it was all about replicas, luckily the main scene has established into regular Saturday racing with a spectator ferry to follow & cheer along.

I look forward to next year cause by the sound of it - we (the CC'ers) may just start to socialise in groups, on trips and actually go somewhere

We have to start somewhere Des, maybe just among our own local guys, hopefully leading up to bigger adventures plus being involved in major events like the Adelaide vintage shing ding i read about. With petrol & diesl getting cheaper then the main enemy should only be time and distance. Something else to consider is a CC delivery service, if someone is going for an adventure then if they can grab some unloved parts that another needs in their van, but the cost is too high, then a contribution for effort would make that easier plus a great excuse to meet up to put faces to the names on the interwebby thingy.

Yep - sounds good ate.
I have seen a yearly program of events on here for CC'ers but I think the last one was last year - nothing was done for this year.
The VV'ers do it every year. I think one of the reasons that the VV'ers are so successful at the yearly program is firstly from years of experience and built up knowledge and contacts but also because they are in the mind set of showing and showing off their Vans plus their tow cars.
As a consequence, they get a lot of return invites and a lot of free and or very cheap accommodation for their effort.
Maybe something for us CC'ers to consider.
As you would have seen in my posts, I have advertised when I am going to my favourite place in the world - Rainbow beach QLD a few times but so far no other CC'ers have been able to make it at the same time.
Maybe just bad timing.
Cheers, Des

Thanks Des, if cash and time distance allowed i would be up there to catch up & enjoy a coldie or two. A big issue also is being the internet & cautious with family posessions etc. At this stage if we all follow your lead and post where & when and a meet up occurs then awesome. With many so spread out small groups is really a good way to baby step the movement. Looking at some of the threads many should be very proud to show & tell but until you have done events it can be a bit daunting plus if it is at a popular function then it more like work than a holiday, i have spoken myself hoarse at many a home buyers expo & boat show, pacing yourself is essential if it is a few days of it! If we wait, or live, long enough then our early to mid 70s vans will be "Vintage" so we just join in with the existing tribes. I would like to think of these era and the flexible workable solutions to free camping and creature comforts a specialty by its self, and ultimatly may help re sale prices, hell some of us may even end up being besties after a few meet ups haha! Sitting behind the keyboard & just focusing on parts and fixing bits should be just an important part of this community, not the end all etc, in my opinion.
