Hi, I've recently purchased a Viscount 18' tandem pop top. It has a kitchen at front,150 ltr fridge & lounge & table down the O/S. Island double bed at rear. Double wardrobe & bunk beds up the N/S. I haven't seen this type of viscount where the pop top is almost the whole length of the van. I was told by the 2nd owner it is a 1981 model but i have since been told that it may be an earlier model. Could some one shed some light with possibly some history on this type of pop top & if they were popular. Any Info would be appreciated. Cheers

Hi Swaggy, Looks to me like a 1981 Grand Tourerthats when they were released, regarded by many as the best vans Viscount ever made. The full length and width roof was standard on that model,as were the wrap around front windows. Are you going to restore or use as is? Cheers hughdeani

Thanks so much for your reply hughdeani. Cheers

Yep a Grand Tourer series 1. Same as mine, but I have the full van. This series ran from 81 to 84 where they then changed from, green/yellow, green/brown. yellow/brown, orange/brown or blue/brown side stripe combinations. the interior fabric and benchtops refected the side stripe combinations they then moved to bronze sliding windows and the side colours went from a midline side stripe (like yours) to the bottom of the van (in one colour)and a stucco finish on the alluminumn, this series 2 ran till around 1987. This first series of Viscount Grand Tourer had over 70 floorplans avail from 12ft to 33 ft, according to an old edition of Caravan Tests that I have. probably many of those were for the mobile home market, which has pretty much deminished as permanant living in caravan parks is nowdays illegal in many states. It is likely it was the designers at Millard that Viscount partially poached this van from, Viscount purchased Millard in 1979 when it went broke from a devistating hail storm damaging most of their completed stored stock, plus other hard times for the company. Millard had just released its series 80 when Viscount took over, and they were due (Viscount) for a model change as the curved roof supreme, royal range was pretty much Unchanged in its design since production in the 60's. The Grandtourer used many simmmillar lines and finishes as the new Millard, and eventually the Millard and Viscount became identical, till the mid 80's.. just different branding. I personally am a Viscount enthusiast, and these are my favourite of all of them, although some of the older Royals and Supremes can make me go week at the knees too, . Even the last of the Gazal editions after year 2000 (Sports, Grand Tourer and Newport) had the tradional Viscount feel, even though there was a build quality issue and not very exciting arrangement of floorplans. See my previous posts where I have uploaded the original sales brouchure from this exact van and was used on the cover of the article in the most recent "Time to Roam" magizine on the story about the rise and fall of Viscount Caravans..Hope you enjoy it.cheers Visco.

Thanks for your help G`Day Jill, to help the folks who help, some pics of the van showing features, door position/s colour scheme if original plus drawbar number, why not just sign up and start a thread as a member here? Note weight can vary a lot due to add ons or even water moisture ( 1kg equals 1 litre) so a damp van can weigh a lot more than an exactly the same dry version, foam seat covers can weigh 10kg plus, in extreme conditions haha.

Hi all. We have a 1981 Grand Tourer which needs the sway dampers (shockies) replaced. does anyone know where we would be able to purchase these. They are 38cm long in the closed position so not easy to find alternatives for them. I have seen some posts inferring that we can just leave them off without any problems but we would prefer to replace them. Cheers to all.
