We just bought our first caravan. She is beautiful, full of potential, and a bit of a mystery.
She was advertised as a 13ft 1976 Viscount. Which was great as Viscounts, we are told, are strong and don't mind being on the road too long, due to the aluminium frame. She is lovey looking but seemed to have lost much of her internal retro appeal and we wanted to give it back. It was a six hour one way drive for us to go and see her, but we didn't mind. When we saw her though, I started to have my doubts as to her being a Viscount. Yes she does seem to have the shape of a Valiant (from what little I know), but next to the door is the logo Gypsy 12'. The guy we got her from said that he had only had her for 3 and a half months.
At home I jumped on the net and found that there had been a Gypsy Caravan co in Australia......the earliest reference I found was in a magazine of 1948. We looked at the limited number of classic Gypsy caravan images......I think all dated back to the 50's. But our van doesn't look like any of these. She looks like maybe a mid/late 60's Valiant, but the water tank filler seems to be in a different position. I'm wondering what year Gypsy stopped building vans. The chassis number is B1976 and I suspect that that is the reason that the guy thought that it was built in 1976. It seems to be on a timber frame as there are screws rather than rivets.
So it looks like we have a 12 foot Gypsy.
Not sure if anybody has any idea on how we can learn more about our new caravan?
