My daughter and son-in-law bought a new 17ft van last year. A couple of months ago a tree branch gouged a deep scratch along the side. Cost of repair $13000 for a new side (insurance approved). They have to replace the whole side because panels cannot be recycled once they are removed. Give me the classics anytime.

Yeah, jacko, the method of manufacture today means the walls are a bonded sandwich. Any damage means the whole wall has to be replaced. Franklin caravans were built in the '70s with the same principle, but the age of the adhesive means it has probably lost a fair bit of its grip, and you can probably separate the parts to some degree.
I saw a 20ft Jayco during our recent travels that had a nasty scrape mark all along one side and the last bit at the rear completely ripping out the rear end fibreglass panel. The van was sitting in a holding pen at a caravan park, probably waiting for repairs to be organised.
Like you say, at least the vans from the old days can be pulled apart and worked on in relatively smaller sections. No need to replace the whole shebang, hey?!
cheers, Al.
