enidb, the easiest and cheapest way to make it is with 42x19mm pine framing (available at Bunnings) and topped with plywood. Somebody either on this forum or the Vintage forum did exactly what I'm describing, but do you think I can find the thread for it?! This other thread shows something similar but they still used a metal frame under the ply: Fitting a larger bedAnd this thread shows how they adapted the original bed spring base to operate with gas struts: 1972 Millard 18 foot - M27305. Scroll down about a third of the page and you'll see the photo. Let me have another hunt around to see if I can find the complete timber version. cheers, Al.

Found another thread enidb, this one by gav about his Viscount poptop. It'll show you another option using melamine coated timber. Read from the top of this page to see how the bed frame was made, and go down to just before halfway to see how the gas struts were fitted: 1978 Viscount Grand Tourer poptop - 81649I'm still looking for exactly what I was thinking of. This thread from the Vintage forum shows how the two single beds were transformed into a queen size bed. See bottom of Page 2 and top of Page 3: 1961 Skyline Caravancheers, Al.

Just a foot note, you can get this edging moulding in quite a few different colours - not just chrome.

BUILDING A BACK BED. Thank you to all who posted links to other forum members who have built back beds into their caravans. After much study, (because I have never built anything more than a pencil case in high school) I made a start and have nearly finished. We are taking the caravan away over Easter so its all go go go to get the bed finished. My husband is a wee bit amazed that I have built something :-) After Easter I will organise to buy some gas lifters from somewhere and will install them. I will post some photos soon.

Great job on the bed frame, enidb! That's as good as any professional could do, so you should be well and truly chuffed with how it turned out. There is a school of thought that says there should be holes in the cover board to help prevent condensation/moisture accumulating between the mattress and the board. Some people use slats to help with that situation, rather than a full sheet of plywood or whatever. It's just something to keep an eye on as time goes on. You may need to make some modifications depending on whether condensation is an issue in your neck of the woods. That symbol on the front of the van looks like it would ward off any nasties that might attempt to enter your van. What is it actually?? cheers, Al.

Hi there! Thanks Al - The symbol is a TRANSFORMER -- AUTOBOT. They are the good guys. The deceptions are the bad guys. Its a CARTOON kind of thing. My boys grew up with it.
Thanks too about the condensation issue. Yes I did wonder about that myself but in the end just went for a board because I could make a pine rectangle and put a board on it. The whole slat exercise was beyond me. I don't know how to make those little joins. I intend to take the mattress out when I am not using the van = for now it is just one of those self inflating camp bed mattresses that we use in the tent. It squashes down and rolls up and goes in the house. When my budget permits, I will get a decent mattress and look at putting a slat base in. Luckily the hinge top and board is cheap and easy to remove or replace (and recycle the board). I was rushing to get it useable for Easter (tomorrow!). Wish me luck that my carpentry holds and I don't end up going through the bed :-)
Happy Easter Caravaners! May all your caravans keep you warm and cosy over Easter. Thanks again for all the positive and useful posts. Stay safe on the roads. EnidB

Thanks Denis - I briefly had a look at your links and it may save me having to figure out how to build a slat base. Thank you so much for your post. I will read it through in detail when I get back from the Easter camp with the draught horses at Churchill Island. I will also post some holiday caravan pictures. Happy Easter!

Your van looks awesome enidb! I've just bought a 78 Viscount Supreme, we pick it up in a week. Not sure how I will sleep until then lol! I'm going for the same flooring as you, I'd love to do a pressed tin splashback, and my colour scheme is mint green and pastel pink Happy Easter! cheers Karen

Hi Karen. I think you are going to have a ball Glamping up your van! I can't wait to follow your progress! I love the sound of your color scheme and yes everyone loves the new floor in our van. Definately a hit. Easy to clean.. Be prepared to have people at petrol stations come up and want to look inside whilstyou are checking your tyres and fueling up! We have just come back from Easter camping with the draught horses and our van and we had a ball. We held our first dinner party in the van last night. I have dedicated an overhead cupboard to drinks. Cocktails. We entertained Vintage caravan friends last night who own a Roadmaster and we had a great time. Our other friend brought his original Don caravan and he even bought flamingos to mark the guy ropes to the old annex...my husband had the job of towing all the Clydesdales whilst we took the caravans.
By the way Al, the carpentry on the back bed worked a treat and we didn't fall through it. I do need to see about getting those gas lifters installed though. I need to get them double strength because I need to get to my things and my husband doesn't like getting out of bed at 6 am so ....maybe I could gas lift the bed with him in it?..ha ha. I hope you all had a great Easter in your caravans.
