G'day all, about a year ago I picked up this little "Kookaburra" camper trailer....along the lines of the early model Cub Campermatic pull-over trailers. The refurb has been a bit slow as I've been enjoying my existing ACT CRUISER Camper-trailer mainly ( until today, as I just sold the ACT ! )and now I'm a single -trailer guy again. The bloke i bought it off really didn't know much about it, and the rego papers merely state that it's a "Kookaburra" make, year 1988, tare weight 220kg...and the vin is just some numbers welded into the drawbar. As we know with some of these older and offbeat beasts, the rego paper info might just be BS especially when there's no manufacturer tag attached. So I'd be really interested if anyone's actually ever heard of Kookaburra camper trailers. I contacted Cub Campers here in Sydney but it seems like it's not one of theirs ( they did once have a Kookaburra model canvas that went onto the top of a standard trailer...so a soft-floor model, very different to my rig ). My trailer originally came with little wheel-barrow wheels sitting under a flat floor, and had a single 50mm diameter square pipe drawbar...which was pretty weak and bowed. So my first job was to make up a proper A-frame drawbar, tub the floor to create inner guards which then allowed slightly bigger wheels, fit new upgraded springs & new 6-stud hubs etc. Then I fitted an alloy frame roof-rack off an old Landrover....which now also becomes a nice solid set of legs when the top is pulled over to set the camper up. Presently in the process of repainting the whole thing. Also fitting a set of deep-cycle batteries,12volt power sockets & LED-lighting for bush camping, and the trailer already has 240volt power for when we're in caravan parks. This thing probably will end up looking far from original so hope I don't upset any purists !! The object is just to get out there and enjoy it as much & as often as possible. She pulls easily behind our little 4x4 Corolla wagon, whereas the ACT CRUISER needed our gas-guzzler Nissan Pathfinder !! Anyway enough said for an initial post...I'll update the rebuild along the way....would also love to hear from anyone with some info on the "Kookaburra". Will post some pics soon ( seems to be a glitch in the forum at present preventing file uploads ). Regards all - Steve.
