Hi All, I'm new here so please be kind. Last weekend I purchased a 1980 16 foot Viscount Supreme, however reading other posts, the chassis number 'R87509' would indicate it is meant to be a 1978 Royal. I will have lots of questions as i get to know my van better, but for now i just would like to introduce myself and probably seek some clarification that i have made the right choice in my purchase. Thanks Othereden

G'day othereden, and welcome to the forum! I think the van looks quite tidy and in good condition, based on your photos. Yes, your chassis number is a 1978 number, and it's not the first time we've seen an alternate model built on a Royal chassis number. In the dying years of the 1970s, the caravan industry was in dire straights and many manufacturers closed down. Those that remained had no doubt cut back on their production rates, and were building whatever they could on the next available chassis. The last four numbers mean your chassis was the 7,509th built that year, which would have been pretty close to the end of the year, I should think. It might have even been possible that your van wasn't sold until 1980, and that's where that year originates from. Who knows for sure?? Doesn't look like you have to do very much at all to the van to get it ship-shape. Lucky you!! cheers, Al.

Hi Al, Thanks for your information and clarification. I showed it to the minister for war, peace, finance and entertainment, and it will/should keep me out of the doghouse for another week. To me it seems to be in pretty good condition, however i haven't had a chance to check it all out (new bub due in 2 days, have to get my priorities right). It was a rush as I drove to it's location (3hrs), looked at it, purchased it and got a UVP to move it, all before midday last Saturday. Moved the van is to its new home, where i can now at my leisure gaze upon it and contemplate it's first little adventure. First things first though, I need to get it registered and search harder to find a full annex for it. Othereden

My first question In the photos (in the link somewhere above), you can see that the last photo shows a 'mystery knob'. It is between the fridge and the stove, it pushes in but doesn't stay in, and it appears to have two wires attached that disappear into the fridge cavity. I'm hoping some knows what it is and what it's for.
Thanks Othereden

Hmmm...that's something I've not seen before. Hopefully someone with a Viscount can help you out, if it's a standard fitment. On a totally different subject, let me give you a 'heads-up' about someone selling some parts from a 1979 Viscount on ebay, just in case you're looking for any parts. Check out this item, and then check out the seller's other items for sale. They say they'll have more parts from the van listed in the days/weeks to come. The light fitting and the bedlamp have already gone through ebay once and didn't sell (maybe prices were too high??). Now prices are lowered (a bit). cheers, Al.

I think that button is for a 12volt water pump, that when pushed causes water to out of the tap,and when you let go the water stops. Not a standard fitment on a Viscount, but an aftermarket one. Cheers hughdeani

Thanks hughdeani,
That would make sense for its location. I'll have a look about under the sink and van and see what I can see.
Cheers Othereden
