Saw this on the way out of the park - a horse float being used as a caravan - seems to be a bit of a trend lately? IMG_3565 by John Deer, on Flickr

Hi Byronbaylovers, I live in an area surrounded by horse studs and for years you have been able to buy horse floats that are kitted out for overnighting. Some are basic and some have all mod cons! Possibly making them earn their keep now by going caravanning! Cheers hughdeany

I am having the same experience. I am thinking I should have bought the boat, left the box at home.
Its amazing what people use for accommodation. I have not seen a modified horse float yet but I have seen some really strange boxes sitting on trailers.

A few years ago the caravan park had 4 massive horse floats parked, that fitted no horses & a 30 foot caravan 2 story ( or loft on one ) inside the things. Pros attending the Royal Easter Show. Horses moved via air con specialist truck company, tax deductable, so fitting out the old floats made sence i guess.

So a quick update on the Franklin's new life in North Queensland. Have been to Mission Beach and Airlie Beach over the past two months - both trips outstanding. I have included a couple of photographs here for those interested. The Franklin tows very well behind the Navara and although I had to create a new 7 pin round plug to change it from the 12 Pin flat the Gav had, everything seems to be in good order. There is a small gap in the front right corner which I will have to get into at some stage before our really big trip to Byron in December, but that will be a weekend job only I am anticipating. A few little changes - new cushions and covers, new curtains, changed the door locking mech, a new half shelf in the cupboard near the door and when the gas bottle runs out, I will be purchasing a new one, as in QLD we have some strict nanny state laws about gas bottles. The next trip for the Franklin is on Thursday this week - we are off to Bundaberg for the state hockey titles (not me - my daughter) and that is a good 12 hour drive each way so looking forward to a nice break and maybe getting a surf in at 1770. Thanks for the update!

IMG_3565 by John Deer, on Flickr Heard this is becoming popular but yet to see one in the flesh yet - when I do, I'll certainly be introducing myself so I can have a close look. 😊 Having owned horses over the years all I can think of is how they got the stink of horse piss out of the thing... 😁

Finally some time to do something meaningful on the van. I've replaced the drop axle with a brand new straight version, replaced everything else on the braking system, and fitted some new tyres. It's picked it up about 110mm so it doesn't drag its bum on the ground now. A few pics. Old and new image by Gavin Gregory, on Flickr New shiny bits fitted image by Gavin Gregory, on Flickr It sits much higher now. image by Gavin Gregory, on Flickr Shackle bolts are like new, as are the bushes. I don't think it has done any hard work. image by Gavin Gregory, on Flickr G'day snoops, just wondering if you remember the size of the replacement axle? Looking at doing the same and struggling to measure my axles (i have 1 18"6 tandem version of yours) Cheers!

Hi Frankie, sorry but I don’t remember - I got the new one custom made - they only need to know what size axle, round or square, bearing type and overall length from tip of one stub to the tip of the other. I ordered a 45mm square axle, Holden bearings and just measured the old one - it’s not too hard with the wheels off and someone helping.

It's just so damn low an awkward to check but i'll squeeze under there and take some measurements. I loved your build thread and am hopefully going to do one on mine. Heres a pic: ibb.co/cxWXiV

That site is pretty easy if that's where you're uploading your pics to - below the photo is a tab that says 'embed codes' on it - click that, then scroll down to the BBCode - copy that code and paste it into your post - like below - nice looking van . That's all you need to do - it will convert to the pic once you create the post.

Yeah, the original drop axle makes it tight - if you're replacing it anyway you'll need to jack up the whole van up - once it's out it's easy to measure. The new owner of this van seems pretty happy with it - to be honest, I should have kept it - it towed much better than my current Viscount and I've recently split with the missus so only needs to house 1 person now - it would have been ideal for me to keep. Hope you get yours to where you want it - make sure to start your own thread here in the Hall of Fame and keep us updated.

Hello Gav - Wondering if you are still on here. I messaged you on the phone a couple of days ago, but you may have changed phone numbers now. The van had a little drama coming back from our annual trip to Byron/Noosa this year when one of the bearings seized and the left wheel came off. Was a bit traumatic - needed a new axle which has been done. The problem is that when the wheel came off, it must've jumped up into the black plastic housing beneath the seat. It has lifted the flooring slightly and I am wondering what to do. It is still towable, but the insurance company want to write it off! I don't. Apart from this incident, the van has been going like a dream - a few little leaks starting in the roof with all the rain we get up here and that's my next job after I get this wheel arch sorted out (if I can).

Fist time back here in a long time sorry. I did eventually get in contact with the owner - not sure of the outcome though - the flooring & guard needed repairs. Would be good to know if it got repaired ok. It is a cracking little van.

Good news. Van repaired - floor resealed and van back on the road. She is starting to get a couple of little leaks in the roof which I have to get to before we head off south in December once again. Any recommendations for the best sealant to use on the roof?

Any recommendations for the best sealant to use on the roof? Great news! Glad it's back on the road. The sealant that is on there is just the Cromellins sealant from Bunnings I used years ago - the old stuff scrapes off ok to redo - I would probably go with Mustangs recommendations to be honest.
