It hasn't been hot here at all - I'm only half hour north of Melbourne. Was around 22 yesterday when I tried it. Apart from today there's nothing above 30 in the outlook. On Sunday it was only 10, so had the other extreme then! I am big fan of PPC paints Por 15 for any resto work they are not cheap but are paints with a extremely high pigment ratio , up to 80% so unlike many that contain up to 80% solvents are easilybrush coated as there is not all that solvent to burn off and leave brush marks , I have used the cheap 50c 1" brushes to do an engine and you would swear it was powder coated . I have heard it said you could use the blunt end of a dry stick to get a perfect finish . Have a look through their site lots to see and read BUT as I said not a cheap per L option however VERY good coverage ratio because of the high pigment ratio Victorian dealers Stockists Vic

The only problem with the primer it is that the second coat has to be apply when the primer it is tacky other ways the paint will not stick. Another advantage it is that cure better on humid conditions that was ideal for us here in Tasmania when we was building steel hull yachts. The paint it is so hard that have to removed with an angle grinder fitted with a 40 gr sanding disk.

I have decided to use an enamel paint but will have to tarp each section to keep wind out, over-spay from coloring the neighbors house and hopefully most of the bugs off the painted walls.

So I bit the bullet and kept going with the paintbrush. I'm still 50/50 on its finish but I'm sure I'll be fine with it once it's sorted. It will be a good 5 meter paint job so it won't look so grotty when I'm heading down the highway. Got the lines masked up and a couple of coats of Orange on them too as well as something else - which I won't spoil the surprise for - pics tomorrow arvo I hope depending on what time I get home.

I do not know how many coats are you applying and if you are a heavy hand on the brush. Based on that I recommending you to be very light on the brush with long stokes and you will see that the coat will cover the previous paint brushes marks. I have applied 4 coats in my van using that technique. For the lines I have used sign writters tape because they do not bleed. Remove the tape after 10 minutes in each coat. Cheers

Thanks. Yes, doing similar to that. The tape I used has let to some bleeding but I've got some pin striping to stick over the edges which will both set off the stripes and cover that up hopefully.

May be a few days now as it's freezing cold and raining today so painting is out. At the range instead killing some paper targets...

So finally got somewhere with the paint - got one side almost complete. Will have it finished tonight - just one more coat of paint along the top. Anyway, a few pics as I quite excited by how it looks! Now, just before I post some pics, I need you to be aware that I've stuck some non Frankiln bits on it! I'm sure you guys will be kinder than some folk on the Vintage forum for my 'bastardisation' here. As some background, when I repaired the rotted out timber in the base of the wall on one side, I basically had to wreck the trim piece along the bottom edge and up into the gaurd to get to what I needed to. While I used a bit of aluminium angle along the flat edge, I didn't know how I was going to make the guard are look good again - but I found he answer from another manufacturer - Viscount - a set of plastic spats screwed on made all the difference and as you can see below they got a coat of Orange paint as well. I was going to paint the wheels orange too, but I think that would be too much, so I'll splash some silver on them instead. To make the edges look sharper and to cover the bleeding I got in between the colours, I zapped down to Autobarn and got some 6mm chrome pin striping. To say I'm stoked with the results is an understatement! The Franklin badge has been off the van for ages. I was going to try and repaint it but I haven't got the skills to do that properly so I just cleaned it up and polished the chrome on it - it still looks good. So, 1 side down, 3 more to go. I deliberately started on the back so I would have my technique sorted by the time I do the front, so that should be even better, but not sure when I'm going to be able to get that done - I was hoping by the time I went to Corowa in a few weeks but with work at the moment that's very unlikely as I will be working the next 13 days straight because of the Airshow which I'm involved with.

If it were mine I would go with the orange wheels and chrome trims ala Mustang's Viscount , looks great so far and I am sure you are not the first person to ever use Viscount spats on a different brand caravan

Yep, wheels to come - I'll think about colour. The chrome tape worked out far better than I'd hoped - it really makes it pop.

I think both Mustang and Retired John have a lot to answer for in terms of bling and quality... damn you guys I do like the cheome sticker idea too as my viscount hasnt got perfect edges, mainly due to alloy pattern that will easily bleed.

Well, after 2 days I have one side completely finished. This is going to take some doing..,. Ended up with 4 coats over everything. Maybe I could use another coat in places but it's only me that can see through one or two spots. Used just on a litre of paint all in, so pretty happy with that. Made a couple of brackets to support the lower corners of the spats, and they are pretty solid now, so again, happy with that. I'll see how long it takes me to catch one on a log heading into the bush with it.... One thing that will need attention is the chrome stripe - where it's on a flat surface it is no problems and has stuck well, but one of them is right on an edge so folded over a bit length ways - this hasn't worked as well. I'm thinking of painting some clear coat over it to keep it stuck on - I'll let you know how I get on, but it will be a few weeks now as the van will be pressed into service on Wednesday when I take it to Airshow and live in it for 4 or 5 nights to avoid the 3 hour round trip to site and working 12 hours a day there as well for the next week, then the week after Airshow we are off on Holidays in it for 2 weeks. At least I can show everyone what it will look like eventually.... Final pic of the good side, much more work now to do on the rest but this will spur me on.

I agree the spats "seem" flimsy Mustang made a backing board for his and routed the outline so the spats actually fit into the backing board me I just screwed them on as mine will never do much work and definitely no off bitumen camping

Will see how I go - they are mounted as solidly as I can without doing the backing board bit - that's a good idea I might try at some stage. Mine does a tonne of KM - nearly 8,000 last year. It will do nearly 1,000 kays in the next 3 weeks. No off road on this trip but I do take it off road quite a bit - not for 100's of KM, just a few KM down that last track into the bush, or that bit further along the river than the Grey Nomads are prepared to drag theirs to so I get a quiet spot. That can take me through some tight squeezes so I'll see how they hold up.
