G'day, just wondering what sort of paint one would use for painting the outside of a caravan? Would it be automotive paint, house paint or something else? An idea as to how many litres a 15' van would take would be great also Cheers Donna

I would probably use auto paint for the sides and ends and solarguard type paint for the roof. That was my original idea with my van but then I re-clad the sides and used solarguard on the roof . I guess roughly 6 litres if you spray auto paint sides only or get a 10 litres of good outdoor house paint. Pete

I think your choice of paint depends on the condition of the van, the amount of time you have to prepare the van for painting and if you can do it undercover. Looking at the vans on this site that have been repainted the ones with air-compressors and auto spray seem to get a better final finish than those with a traditional paint brush. I have just repainted my van that had previously been painted badly with a house paint, but it took a while to sand back all the drips and runs from the previous brush painted finish. I have been very happy with the White Knight metal paints, which seem to have a better quality finish than the house paints, but are more expensive, and don't have the colour range of house paints. From my experience with commercial paints I do know that price is usually a pretty good indication of quality...best of luck with it.

Poor Hervey has virtually no paint left on him, especially on the sides and what is there is very thin and chalky. The paint on the front isn't as bad and i'm not sure about the roof, only had a quick look at it once but think its chalky too.

I have painted a few now, i use industrial enamel with a uv stabelser. Firstly wash van thouroughly with sugar soap broom and scotchbright wrince thoughrouly . then degrease with prepaol. Tape up trim and windows. Thin paint to specification by paint supplier and spray. Start with the roof and work from top down. Take the tape off while still wet. Finalt woit a day or two before taping up and adding a stripe. Industrial enamel should cure hard and have a smooth finish. I use toplile paints they can make any colour

An old neighbour of mine swears by paving paint. He has used it on a number of boats and a caravan and it bonds to the surfaces and does not flake. I guess an industrial enamel with an epoxy hardener mixed in would be very similar and might even work out cheaper too.
