Hi all, new to the forum. I have recently come into the possession of a Viscount caravan. This forum has helped me learn more about it. It is in original condition, 1970's i think, dual axle, shower, toilet, oven, fridge, skylight etc, i think its a supreme model, has an orange flash on the side. It has the original rubber from the 70's with the old measurements on the side wall ( the cross ply?). Im not sure where VIN is located so i can decipher that (any help welcome re this). I would like to share some photos but its too hard as theres no attach image tab. If the moderator is keen he/she can msg me an email i could email images and they can add them to this thread on my behalf. Thanks all. Pete

Could I also add that it is better to put the image code in rather than attach an image. It just makes it viewable straight away rather than having to open the attached pic. Welcome to the forum by the way.

G'day peterhsv, Well done on mastering Photobucket on your first go. To find out more into about the age of your van, you need to do a couple of things: 1. Look for the chassis number welded on the drawbar just next to the jockey wheel. 2. Have a look through the information in the Viscount History thread in our Museum section: Viscount historyI think you'll be finding out your van is from 1973. cheers, Al.

I will check the numbers on the drawbar whenever i get a chance to go to where im storing it at the moment.
Would you know if i will have difficulties in nsw re registering it if i dont have any rego papers?
Also where do u get parts for these like wheel bearings? Side annexe?

If you don't have any rego papers, I presume that means the van is unregistered.
As far as I know, the NSW rego records go back to 1987 (could be wrong on that), so you could check to see if your chassis number is still on file or not.
Usually, the process for getting an unregistered van done in NSW is:
1. Have a signed receipt from the seller showing the sale price of the van 2. Get a weighbridge ticket showing the Tare weight of the van 3. Have the vehicle inspected for a Blue Slip 4. Fill out the rego form 5. Pay your money
If the van is still in the NSW rego records, you should be able to save yourself from getting a weighbridge ticket.
Wheel bearings should be the standard Ford or Holden bearings (sometime Valiant). Available from trailer parts suppliers. Other interior fittings are not so easy to come by. You have to be lucky sometimes, depending on what it is you're looking for.
Annexes come up on ebay on a regular basis. Depends what size you need. If an annexe is too large, canvasmakers can do alterations if the overall price is right.
Part of owning any of these old vans is that you have to be creative in how you go about fixing it up. It's not like you can go to a corner store and buy stuff off the shelf. You'll find you'll become quite an expert detective in tracking things down.

Yes the van is unregistered.
To find out whether the van is on the rego records, is that just a matter of inputting the numbers on the drawbar?
I'm only planning on moving the van 2.5 hours from its current destination and making it a weekender at the back of a beach house, so hopefully all I need is a permit which I hope wont be too painful.
Im planning on only cleaning it, and minor tlc, its cheaper and better to leave it as a time warp.

Yes, they should have a record of the chassis number (on the drawbar) if the van was previously registered in the last 20 years or thereabouts.
And yes, if you are only moving it for the one trip, a permit is all you need. I think that only involves a roadworthy check (and some money, of course).

In Victoria you can get a permit by phone, pay with card then they email the permit. Print, stick on window, job done. They take calls for that on Saturdays too (very handy) Was about $40 bucks for 28 days. No inspection of vehicle at all, they just ask if its ok to tow.

Thanks guys........ If Victoria is easier, I wonder if I can get a Victorian permit over the phone and then use it to tow from any point 'A' (in Victoria) to point B (NSW) then C (NSW). of course id only be making the B to C leg of the journey as the van is in NSW. Just a thought........

Does anyone know any caravan service companies in sydney west that can come out to check / make any repairs needed to a caravan thats been sitting for a while so that i can be confident in towing it to another location? Thinking bearings, rewiring tail lights etc... im not mechanically minded

I just use the cheap home-brand cream cleaner (or creme cleanser) from the supermarket laundry section (see this example at Coles ). I've paid about $2 for a 500ml bottle in the past, and that size goes a long way. Then I get those green or white nylon scourer pads (like these ones ). Hose down the section of the van you want to clean (do about a square metre at a time), wet the nylon pad, apply a dollop of cream cleaner, and away you go. It will take off all the grime and the oxidised paint surface, and leave you with a nice clean surface. It doesn't wear off the paintwork that is still in good condition underneath. It takes hours to do a full van, but the results are worth it. Here are some 'before and after' photos of when I did the cladding on the Millard poptop I had... You could probably get one of those electric car polishing gadgets and do the job faster, but I wanted to build up my muscles, ha ha. cheers, Al.

Thanks Al, I will most likely follow your instructions, or I might use car wash shampoo and a gurney, unless I am told not to for some reason that hasn't crossed my mind.

I gave mine a quick wash when I got it home, and did a small section with a scourer to see what would happen - that is the best bit on the van now, and I know at some stage I'll do the rest like that. Cheap to do, but plenty of elbow grease required.

Thanks snoops, I cant wait to be in a position to clean up mine, im sure like your one mine will come up real good. Does the scourer put micro scratches on the surface or its not really that abrasive?? Also, anyone have experience doing it with a gurney? or its only an elbow grease job?

Just wondering with unregistered caravans... is there a register with the NSW RMS I can log that I now own the caravan but am not registering it?

I'm not aware of any RMS log for ownership of unregistered caravans, Peter. Can't imagine they would want to get involved in recording who owns the hundreds and thousands of caravans sitting unregistered around the country. The only issue for you will be if you ever actually want to get it registered. Then you need to provide proof of ownership, either a receipt for when you bought it showing its value (so they can charge you a fee based on its value), or some sort of paperwork showing somebody gave it to you, but also showing what its market value would be (so they can charge you that same fee). Get the picture? They ain't interested in who owns unregistered vans. They are only interested in getting money out of you when you try to get it registered. cheers, Al.

dont forget to use the IMG line when posting photos, a quick hit with a guerney should fix that grime
