Hi guys, my wife and i just purchased what we believe is a 1971 viscount royal and are just wondering about insurance, as we have read not many companies will insure classic vans. Warm Regards Simon

Ive never had a problem insuring a classic van at market value. If you want to insure at an agreed value which is significantly higher than their estimated market value then you may have trouble.

I had no problems insuring a 1977 Millard, and now the 1992 Windsor, with GIO insurance. When I made the decision to go with GIO after doing the cost comparisons, I had to pluck a figure out of the air for what I wanted the Millard insured for. When the paperwork came, I read through the handbook, and discovered that it doesn't really matter what figure I had picked, it's up to the assessor to determine the value of the van immediately prior to the "accident". It's probably different if you want Agreed Value, but if you want Market Value, then your interpretation of market value will most likely differ widely from an assessor's point of view. In other words, don't kid yourself that your van is worth more than what the market would pay for it. Doesn't matter that you've spent 12 months and $10,000 on restoring it...if you've gone market value then you get market value. Ask any of us who have restored a van and then sold it. Did we get back the total value of what we spent on it? No way! cheers, Al.
