I managed to smash the glass in one of my 1971 Viscount side windows today while backing up the driveway. The frame is ok, but the glass is in a dustpan. Can anybody recommend an on-site glass replacement service for caravans in Melbourne's South Eastern suburbs? Does Windscreens O'Brien offer this service? Any help would be appreciated..

I think you may be able to it repaired at a glazier place. I believe you may be able to gently tap and slide out the opening part of the frame out up the top and take it in to the glaziers. What do others think? If it is an on site van, then normal glass replacement would be alright wouldn't it? Silicone it in with windscreen silicone and put the rubber back in. If you put the rubber in a bucket of hot water with a few drops of detergent, the rubber becomes flexible and slips back into the space when you press it in with your fingers.

I ended up getting O'Briens to replace it - it seems like a standard rate is $205 which the O'Briens guy quoted over the phone without even asking me the size of the window! The guy that did it had obviously done a caravan window before and knew how to take it out and replace it. Took him longer to write it up, do a charge with his mobile eftpos machine and give me a receipt. Remaim

Remain, you should learn how to do some stuff yourself ... last window I had replaced cost $45 - because I took it off the van and went to a glazier

Yes Cruisingdoug, I thought about it, looked at the how-to pics (which were very good), looked at the wet weather forecast, thought about my hand's lack of fine motor skills due to tendon surgery, and the time pressure with all of the other things that are happening in my life and decided that it would be less frustrating faster (and drier for the van) to pay for the fast service. If I ever lose another window I'll have a think about removing the window before ringing O'Briens. In retrospect it was the right choice as just as O'Briens were finishing a storm started - if I had done it I would have had the window half out for the start of the storm, and the window was on the most exposed side to the storm.

No offence intended Remaim (and apologies if any taken ) - of course sometimes its better to just pay and get it done when the circumstances demand it ... I was just surprised at how much extra the O'Briens service was!
