I have been considering the purchase of a van around 10 - 12' to restore. They are rather difficult to find in reasonable condition or they are far far away in another state. Eventually I hope to find my little gem, but until then I have to be content reading about the successes, trials and tribulations of those who have been through the process of restoring these wonderful old vans. I have been buying the new magazine Vintage caravans, and have been inspired by the quality of the restos that have been shown in each issue. Hopefully this forum will help to keep the dream alive and one day I can post some images of my little gem.

G'day roboriginal, and welcome to the forum! ;D
I know of people who have travelled far and wide in their search for an appropriate van, only to discover one in their very own neighbourhood. I discovered four old vans in the front yard of houses when I started walking the dog after we moved here six years ago, so you might be surprised to find what's in your very own backyard. Not all vans are for sale...until you knock on the door and ask if they're interested in selling it.
Good luck with your hunt.
cheers, Al.

Thanks for the advice Al, I am sure that something will turn up. I have read of people travelling for miles only to find the van was not as good as it looked in the photos, that is the reason for me limiting the scope of my search, the see first then buy approach is being rather more cautious. I do like your idea of knocking on doors so I will keep my out when I travel around. Robyn

They rarely are! And even when they aren't in very good condition, the seller will say "it's an easy fix", which immediately makes me wonder why they didn't fix it themselves and get more money for their van!! There's no better education than reading through some of the threads in our Hall Of Fame section. They will show some of the problems that people encountered once they got their van home. When I started searching for our latest van, I set the search requirements on ebay and gumtree to only look for caravans within 50kms of my postcode. In reality, it brought back results that are located to within about 90kms from my home, but at least I'm not going to the other side of the country to find something worthwhile. I could then decide which of the listed vans were worth going for a drive to inspect. Patience is a virtue. ;D cheers, Al.
