Thought it would be a timely reminder for all of those who climb ladders to make sure you fix it so it don't move either with brackets or a good hunk of rope, might save you ending up like me. End result, two severly sprained ankles with multiple fractures to the heel bone of my left foot, no weight bearing on left foot for 6-7 weeks, have an appointment on the 6th Feb with Orthopedic Surgeon to see how it is mending or if he wants to go in and fix with pins or screws, did this on the 29th Dec and spent New years quietly lying in my hospital bed got home 2.00 pm newyears day and can only sit around in my wheelchair now, very frustrating to say the least,so guy's take care out there we are not getting any younger.

Hey there Humpyboy, That's damn bad luck copping a busted axle like that, I guess you won't be towed any-where in the near future. You just take it easy in the garage now, and you have plenty of time to plan your next move, will it be another van or another vintage car, that's the big question ? Just think you could be out in the sweltering sun, so I suppose being laid up under the air-con has it's benefits, although it's a hell of a way to go about getting some rest. All the best and a speedy recovery, no need to say take it easy is there? ;D Cheers kiwijim

Hello all, just a quick update, off to see the Surgeon this arvo and am hoping for some good news, it has felt much much better over the last few weeks, swelling has gone haps and I can move the ankle around quite a bit inside all that bandage with no pain at all so have my fingers crossed that it will be a good outcome today.

Yeah I'm back and have been told that I can walk, only gently for now but as the ankle gets better I can put more weight on it.

One week this arvo since I lost the cast and still only able to put very little weight on my foot boy this is gunna be a long haul, had my first physio visit last Monday and was given some streatching exercises to do and even that's painfull, but what do they say "no pain no gain"was also told the bone would have mended by now but could still take upto 8 weeks for it to get any real strength and even then it may still not take my weight, oh well onward and forward, lesson learnt! the HARD way.

Hi all, thought an update was in order, as I said in my last post the surgeon wanted me to do a bit of weight bearing on the foot weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeell he had me go back to work on the 18th of Feb, so off I tootled with my crutches to work and got through 3 days but by the Wednesday night my foot was so sore that I made an appointment with my GP, long story short I've been home again ever since that visit and I go to see him again next Tuesday my Doc told me last Monday that he wanted me now to start putting some weight on the foot which I've been doing but I still don't think it's right so we will see where we go to on Tuesday.

Gee Humpyboy, sounds like you're having a rough time of it Maybe there is a tiny bit chipped bone tucked away in there somewhere. Hope the doctors can sort you out real soon. Subbie

No chipped bone stuck in there, my GP ordered an X-ray the day I saw him and there were still two fractures that hadn't completly healed, we both thought it strange that the Surgeon didn't bother with an X-ray when he saw me back in Feb, I have been told that the heal bone is the worst bone in your entire body to break as it takes so long to heal and it could take anywhere upto three months or more

Well I saw my GP again today, asked me how it felt and asked my thoughts on how it was progressing, told him that it does ache after I have been up on it but then if I sit down for a bit it soon passes, he feels that by now the bone has healed as good as can and my pain is coming from the soft tissue damage and the fact it hasn't had any weight on it for so long, long story short, he asked what i thought and I replied that I would like to give work another shot, at worst if it gets to bad I can come see him again and we can re-assess so he agreed to let me go back and try, so tomorrow I'm off to work again, went to the Historic races down at Philip Island on Sunday and spent a half hour or more looking at the cars on display and made it through that so we'll see how I go, I did have one special question for him though,"am I able to drive a manual car?" I think so he said, you beauty I can get my FJ back out of the shed again.

i feel your pain i snapped my ankle could not put weight on it for well by the time i had the operation it was well into 4mnths and a proud onwer of 2 screws that will stay with me forever the 2nd day out of plaster still could not walk had to use crutches for another 2 weeks but i jumped on the exercise bike just to get some movement into it and done phsyio for 2weeks. remember baby steps nice and slow and you will notice it might swell up after standing or exercising.I filled the bath tub up with only cold tap water only dont go any colder just past ankle stuck my foot in it just for a minute just to help with the swelling. it might not work for you but i got relief from doing this

eavning all, howed you like an update!went back to work mid March and have been doing 2 days on 1 day off then 2 on again, things haven't been to bad, still gets quite achey if I'm up on it for a long period but once it's at it's worst it dosen't get any worse if that makes sense, go and sit down for a few minutes and it settles back down again, I find that I am able to get around without crutches so long as it is not to sore otherwise it is just one crutch for a bit of support so it appears that I may just be on the mend albeit a bit slow but I can begin to see some light at the end of the tunnel.

Latest update is NO crutches ;D I worked all day Friday without them but then on Saturday my back didn't want to play so found the only way I could get around was using them again but as of Monday I have been back off them so I will be returning them tomorrow along with the shower seat, I'm a big boy now and can stand up all by myself and have a shower ;D the foot seems to be holding out not to bad at work as I'm still using my stool to sit on during the day and only standing or walking when needed so with fingers crossed I might just be able to get back out in the shed and back on to the odd project sooner than later.

That IS good news, humpyboy. It's been quite a saga for you! If it's any consolation, I now think twice about "taking a chance" when I'm doing things on the current project. "Remember what happened to humpyboy", I keep saying to myself. Hope everything continues to get better and better for you. Don't want those projects in your shed to feel totally neglected, do we? cheers, Al.

Thanks AL, Yeah your right we don't want them projects to go stale do we ;D I to will be thinking twice, I started doing this when it came to doing things that needed two or more pairs of hands but will now have to extend that to include raising myself above ground level when something is out of reach They did tell me when they first discovered what I had done that it would be a minimum of 3 months or more before it healed so they weren't to far out with their estimate, it can only get better for me from here on out.

Progress is being made, this will be my third week without crutches and my back has decided to play along again so it's looking up, my foot still lets me know when I ask too much of it so I just sit down and rest it a bit and all is good again for a while, doing 4 days straight this week and will give next week a shot at a full 5 days.
