Capricorn Caravans. East Bentleigh Victoria.
A Brief History. In 1950 Joe Postner decided that he had enough of living conditions in the Communist controlled Czechoslavakia and chose Australia for his new home. He arrived here with nothing but the princely sum of 5 pound in his pocket and the knowledge of his trade as a cabinet maker. Joes first job in Australia was with Dick Thickens at Highway Caravans. After gaining valuable experience and knowledge of the caravan industry, in 1962 he and 3 of his Italian friends, Messers. Piccioni, Palmarini and Kansi got together and founded Capricorn Caravan. The business flourished and a move to bigger premises in Dandenong became necessary. When Mr Kansi decided to return to Europe, the other partners decided to go their separate ways and Mr Piccioni retained the firms name of Capricorn. Joe Postner later opened another factory at Moorabbin and manufactured Cambridge and Islander Caravans.
We dug this up trawling through the internet Mausie

G'day mausie, Well, I could, but that would deprive you of the joy of knowing how to do it yourself. ;D You can modify any of the posts you put up on the forum (but only your own posts), by clicking on the word modify in the top right corner of any particular post of yours. A text box will come up on your screen, showing your post as if you were first writing it. You can modify anything in that text box, including the heading. Then click on the Modify Post button underneath. Easy done! ;D Fix your first post up, and you can then delete your second post, by clicking the word delete next to the word modify (to the right of your second post). Then I'll delete this post of mine, ok? Great piece of information on the history of the Capricorn vans!! cheers, Al.

Mausie, So that explains why Capricorns are so robust. Built by migrants from behind the iron curtain. I wonder how many they built- two so far - yours and mine - oops, and Al's ex van
Good work 99

Purchased a "1985 Capricorn" 17 foot van 2 years ago , I refitted a lot of the inside and re-sealed the roof, she is now ready for another 25 Years service. I too have had a lot of trouble finding out anu info on CAPRICORN vans. Thanks for the history. would love to post a pic or 2 for expert critique. How do I do that?

I've just been reading some of the comments about Capricorn Caravans. I have a 1983 17ft full height van which I have owned for 5 years & am currently getting close to home after a 28000 k, 8 month lap of oz. Great van, no problems, love it.

Hi Neil
It is great news that you were able to take on such a long trip without issues.
Its like driving a solid and reliable old car.
Makes us feel good to know our chassis is strong. Our first long trip with the Capricorn will be to Broken Hill for the vintage caravan rally. Looking forward to it.
Mausie
