G'day kiwijim, Yeah, I see Coles are also now adding liquor deals onto their dockets as well as the petrol discounts. Great for those who like to indulge a little. However, there is still an opportunity they haven't cottoned on to yet. Woolies is expanding their empire to build hardware stores soon, and Coles is owned by Wesfarmers who also own Bunnings, so what we REALLY want to see in future on our dockets are discounts for our HARDWARE purchases! Hands up who wouldn't like 4 cents discount on every nail or bolt they buy?!! cheers, Al.

Gotta agree with you there Al, It would be very nice to cop a discount off Bunnings prices, I have tried already with the pensioner discount querie but, I only get the same answer..... WE are already the cheapest around and will only give a discount , "If you prove the item is cheaper some-where else" Well, they may have to change their tune very shortly, There is a new kid on the block, here in the West. This Mob, who I think are American backed, have already built and opened one Super Store, which makes Bunnings look like a Toy Shop, they intend to build ( already under construction ) another three or four stores here in the West, which should open in the next two or three months. Their recruitment drive for staff has been going on here for the last 6 months and they are very particular who they are employing, professional staff only are being offered a position. This new Mob have catered for everything wanted in the home including all white goods, they offer a good discount on bulk items and are set to take over the Hardware market, that is if Bunnings don't watch it. In answer to this challenge, Bunnungs have suddenly advertised that they are opening another twenty new stores, I think they would be far better off, doing what you suggested,...... Offer bigger and better discounts to draw the public, before it's too late. Just my thoughts. Kiwijim

This is part of a media release from May 2011 (last year): WOOLWORTHS Ltd's hardware brand is to be known as "Masters", as Australia's biggest supermarket chain continues to prepare for its entry into the $42 billion home improvement market. Woolworths, together with its joint venture partner Lowe's Companies Inc of the US, said the first Masters store would open in September or October (2011) at Braybrook, in Melbourne. The Masters stores will go head to head with the Wesfarmers Ltd-owned Bunnings hardware chain, the current market leader in the country's home improvement market. Masters' range of products will include lighting, paint, flooring, kitchens, outdoor furniture, appliances, gardens, walls and windows, power tools, storage, plumbing and bathrooms. The Masters store at Braybrook, which will include a separate trade-only area, will be followed quickly by a number of other stores in Victoria and Queensland. Masters was on track to achieve the initial target of 150 property sites in five years. The website is: masters.com.au/cheers, Al.

Howdy Al,
You are spot on with the name,
Yep, MASTERS are the new kids on the block, and "Boy" they are spending up real big,
If they are going ahead in other States like they are in the West, someone will really have a fight on their hands,
Nothing like some competition to keep the customers happy. ;D ;D ;D

Yep the face of retailing is changing in Australia for better or for worse. The giant turf-war between the retail monsters means cheaper stuff for all of us......but unfortunately at the expense of the small corner store and also the demise of more Aussie jobs. Masters has already opened at least one store in western Sydney, with many more planned.....and yes the shopping experience has definitely improved ( Bunnings will now have to do better than the humble scouts sausage-sizzle out front ! ). I worked at Wattyl Paints on the factory floor....iconic Aussie paint company a year ago or so bought up by the American giant Valspar surface-coatings, which is a close friend of Lowes Hardware in USA. As soon as this takeover happened....Bunnings pretty-well took all Wattyl products off their shelves just in spite ( knowing that eventually Wattyl / Valspar would be some of the preffered brands at Masters Hardware ). This directly put pressure on jobs at Wattyl ( as if the financial downturn wasn't already hurting manufacturing jobs here )....and successive rounds of employee redundancies have followed. Few years ago Bunnings also screwed Wattyl over when they brought in Asian house-paint supplier Nippon and threw many local lines off the shelves......eventually this backfired and they reversed the decision. But the big boys will all be the same, and I know that Masters will be no different ( Valspar are already bringing in foreign aerosol-can spray paints as I've seen them in the warehouse ....but probably no different as the Chinese $2-shop up the road sell imported cheap aerosols ! ). Just makes me sad for my kids' future in this country when local industry - amongst other things - is continually under threat ( not just from "the peril from the north", but also from our friends in the USA ). Suppose it's just something we'll have to live with.....poor old Dick Smith has been bashing his head up against this brick wall for years !! At least we all have our old vans and won't be in the market for any new-fangled $500 Chinese caravans when Bunnings & Masters start selling them.....they sell just about everything else !!!!! Apologies for the rant.....just a pity for a time & culture lost.

More on the same theme. Rumour has it that B---ings decided to squeeze suppliers of tools into exclusive stock deals so they could sew up the market. Any who refused were simply deleted as suppliers. As some manufacturers had got used to the good turnover and stock sales to B---ings they were between a rock and a hard place and went to the wall. This killed GMC which was a Aussie startup that rebranded Chinese tools. They offered an unconditional 3 year replacement guarantee as their tools were cheap and had to reassure the buying public. Pity as they had some unique machines two of which I still use and praise years later. The other supplier that was burnt was Triton- the company that started by winning funding fram ABC with their new invention, the portable Triton workcentre saw. Apparently the reason Ryobi has recoloured their tools green to make them B---ings exclusive. So we see where competition leads in a liberal market. The individuals die and the global companies dominate until they can no longer grow by buying up competition and their overheads come home to roost. Then they squeeze the consumer and that is where you and I lose our freedom of choice. The fuel companies are already there and the telcos almost. Free enterprise is not a perfect model.

Howdy Guys, Some very good points there, all with a message...... "Watch the mighty Hand with the fist full of money" At the time when I started this tread, I said that Wollies had added liquor to their fuel dockets, That was true but "Shock Horror" when I went to Wollies yesterday with the intention of getting a fuel docket to top up the car, there is no longer any mention of a fuel discount on their shopping voucher. Some UN-known brand of cheap wine was mentioned, Now offering one free-bee if you buy one first, at full priceI wonder if this means the end of cheap fuel kiwijim

I remember the little hardware store just around the corner. I use to walk there. Spent lots. Still have the claw hammer I brought from that store. Then McEwans kicked off and that was the end of my Little man round the corner, he could not compete with the range of products. Along came Bunnings, poof where did McEwans go. Guess the new boy on the block had a whole new style and set of products that McE could not complete with. Masters will be one to watch. Let see what we can get out of them. By the way they are hiring.. Then of course... did you have an army disposal store round your corner or a camping place. Now we have Anaconda and BCF... I sure miss the camping store round the corner.. psst lpg 68.9cpl

No I think that is "Costco" - the new grocery giant also from the US. But yeah we all miss the old local disposals store with all that classic ex-military stuff and no-frills camping gear.....not many of those places left around now. We still have a small hardware up the road - actually closer to me than any of the big boys - but unfortunately he doesn't have much of a range ( still - he really knows his stuff, as opposed to the usual teenage part-timers that abound at Bunnings / Supercheap / Rays etc... ). Guess that's the way of the future.....quantity (& price) trumping quality....but we're all partly responsible I suppose, because we all love a bargain !! Sadly I think Dick Smith really might be bashing his head up against a brick wall in this respect. Cheers - Steve.
