Hi All, Guess who got a caravan for her birthday! (Thanks Hubby) I've been dreaming of renovating an old caravan for a while now, and here she is... (hopefully the photos work) It was advertised as a '1976 Viscount OOTrail Pop Top' but I'm not convinced this is accurate. I'll start a thread about my van, to seek the wisdom of forum members as well as share the renovation journey. Looking forward to lurking around here more often. Kate

Hi Kate, Welcome to the forum. What a great starter you have there, not many around with this colour, I like it. Even has the original wheel trims, I think this one may have been under cover being that it is a pop top. Your thread will be moved over to "Hall of Fame" where we want to see your journey, & pics inside. Cheers

Hi All, new to the forum, so hope I'm posting in correct place! Just bought what I think is a 1979 model Viscount. The Chassis no. is TR35393205 for any interested. It's a lovely van and the previous owners had a real passion for keeping everything original. She appears to have had a respray and her stripes have been covered up, but are still there underneath the flaking re-spray. Some minor dents and possibly some hail damage. Original electrolux fridge? Appears to work reluctantly on 240VAC, not on gas though. I think the roof hatch has leaked at some stage as there is some internal water damage and the roof hatch has been covered over. I'm questioning whether to restore this or leave it. We have just returned from the long weekend after I bought her on the Monday, went away on the Friday and didn't want to leave on the following Monday! The family and dogs enjoyed an excellent weekend of impromptu viscounting! So I want to improve her but want to stay as faithful to the original as possible. First (easy) project are the tail lights. I want to put LED modules (for ease of use, no maintenance etc.) on her after bulbs falling out, lenses falling off etc. over the weekend (which I'd like to eliminate next time!) this weekend but maintain the original look. Any suggestions? I think I want to remove some of the water-damaged lining and replace with as close to original as possible. This would obviously mean an opportunity to check for current leaks too. Can you still get the laminate stuff? Is there a modern equivalent that doesn't rot but maintains the look? Would really like to improve the strength and durability of window latches etc. Lots are broken on mine, would like to replace with something a bit better. Also best source for original parts, fixtures fittings etc. Are there other Viscount nuts with advice and stories to share over a few beers in the Lake Macquarie/Newcastle area?! Thanks Guys, happy vanning!

Welcome to the forum Vanmad. . Sounds like you've landed a nice bit of kit. I look forward to seeing some pics of your van, maybe start a thread on it in the Hall of Fame. Most things you're looking at doing are common problems on older vans, and there are plenty of knowledgable experienced people here that ca help you on your way.

Welcome aboard Vanmad
As Snoops has pointed out have a look in the Hall Of Fame (HOF) HERE You can start your own thread and in the topic line put the year of your van/make/serial No this lets others find your thread at a later date and helps others who may be looking for info on a similar van. There is loads of info in the "Tech" section as well
If you need any help with something - just ask
Cheers

Hi all.
Bought this 1979 millard last month and in the process of demolishing the interior. Pluses are aluminium wall frame and a three way fridge that works so far on 240 volt power. Have unhooked gas and 12v battery. Timber ceiling and reasonable floor. Exterior: 2/3 of the roof has hail damage as has the front panel from stone chips. All 3 louvred windows need resealing.
As I am are first time renovater all tips and ideas will be appriecated.

Welcome "79"
Love seeing those Millards get saved, we have a Hall of fame section, if you wish to keep us all updated with your work on your caravan, please give the thread title as year/make/model and draw bar serial number as this is the easiest way for new members to find other vans the same as there's. We have a great tech section as well so when you need to know something just whack a post up in there.
If you need any help with something give me a holler
Cheers

Hello, We will be picking up our first caravan this Saturday, advertised as a 1980 Millard 16ft. I'm not only new to "caravaning" but also to using a thread and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to add pictures (copy and paste wont work). I just read that Millard merged with Viscount in 1979 therefore my van may have actually been produced in the Viscount factory? Once Im able to upload pictures I was hoping to find somebody else with the same van and get some ideas of improvements/ upgrades. Thanks for your help.

Hi there MM, welcome to the forum, everyone has a problem trying to work out how to load photo's to the forum, you need to use a 3rd party as the forum has no storage space available so if you go HERE you will find a few websites that will let you upload your photo's. If your not sure what to do just give us a holler OK
I can see a caravan in your profile pic and if that is the van is looks around 1978 - 80 so you may be close with the year. If you look on the draw bar up near the tow hitch there should be a "letter" and numbers welded on it, this will give us a good idea of the year as well.
So how you go with loading a photo and we will go from there
Cheers

Hi Everybody, I have been interested in vans of various types for quite a while. My present caravan however is a 1991 Golf poptop, so actually its a bit young for this forum. However I'm keen to preserve and restore this van and I use it quite regularly. I'm sure the various topics discussed on this forum will be of interest to me.

That door mod is one that seems rather popular in some of the circles I associate with. Nice to have a screen door open on hot nights and feel safe..
The inside looks pretty good from where I sit.
Where are you staying?

hi bobt i dont mind the door so much but it doesnt open or close unless the van is on level or close to. giving me dramas. staying at stanthorpe for next week and then boonah. yea interior pretty well looked after although has been some moisture in van and chip board is becoming more chips than board slowly. the lack of working windows is my main concern atm and that it takes 2 people to close the ones that do open.

ooh bugga, sounds like a bit of movement in the body. Be careful when you wind the corner stablizers down if you over do them you may be flexing the body which will not help when you try to open doors and windows. This was alway a problem in the various pop tops I have owned. Might be good idea if you pop over to Hall of fame and start your own thread.

Hi everyone, happy new year I am a first time vanner, because I have to relocate this year for work and needed accommodation. I don't really like vans and prefer to camp, but in FNQ it is going to be too uncomfortable without air cond. I was referred to this site by a few members on AULRO. I went out and took a heap of pics of my van this arvo, now my computer's SD card reader refuses to read the card So the easiest way for you to see it is go to the ebay link and you will have to click "See original listing" next to the heading CaravanThe auction says it is a Newlands van but when I asked the seller for details for the UVP he said it is a Roma van. The chassis number is M305 and it is supposed to be a 1973 model. If anyone has info on what it is, I would appreciate it. It has a bit of water damage inside that I didn't know about as I bought it sight unseen.

Welcome along mate - good to see you here. When you're ready, start a thread in the 'Hall of Fame'. Any questions you have can be answered here - there is a wealth of knowledge to be tapped into. The van looks like a good base to start with and shouldn't take too much to wrestle into shape.

Hi all, just joined up and keen to see and ask members about their vans. I've ' borrowed' my parants snipe which is in FANTASTIC original Condition. When I can get my stupid brain around posting photos , I'll stick some up . It's tragic, but I really like old stuff !!
