Thank s for the welcome! Yeah, we are still over the moon with his offer to give us the van as well. He is moving up into a nice new $68000.00 Tavlor 21ft monster. (Looks extraordinary though) I read the thread on here that showed the 1976 Viscount Royal, and that is how we would like our 1978 to end up looking. I've learned so much over the last 2 days of reading through this great forum, very inspirational. I visited our neighbour who just spent $17000.00 on a baby sized Jayco poptop, and going on what I know now, he would have been much happier getting an older classic for 1/3 of the price. As I said, can't wait to get started,

Hello to every one. I have been spying on you all for a while now as my family and I trawled your expertise on 70s vans and waited to find one we could buy.

G'day millicent, and welcome to the forum! ;D If I'd know you'd been spying on us for a while, I would have made sure I was properly dressed! And since you are so good at spying, I don't suppose you've spied a really good 16ft Viscount anywhere? No?? Hah!...so much for YOUR spying abilities! When you say: "...waited to find one we could buy.", does that mean you are still waiting, or have you found something? I know spies don't normally give away any secrets, but you can share with us if you've found something. cheers, Al.

Yes- hello sorry my message was a bit mysterious. I was interrupted and when I got back I found myself, posted. We are now the very proud and utterly clueless owners of a Millard family bunk van -M52524. About 15 or 16ft. It was cheap and is battered. She is currently being readied for her bluey. Van doctors diagnosis is she is sturdy and worth saving. I am clammering to get my hands on her, but as she has to be parked on the road for a while, (we absail down our driveway for sport), we thought her nine broken window panes might be a little distressing for our neighbours. Her interior is shot. It is original, but thoughly painted out in white and filth. The ceiling is excellent. the front and backwalls are rippled and need to be changed. Most damage is below the window level. Floor is okay, but a bit springy near door so I will do something there. So she is a bit sorry for herself. But she need not be; We have plans and they involve her! Poor old girl she doesn't know yet, but she has fallen into my hands ;D ;D .- Lets just say, - no peaceful retirement for Millicent....

Great! When you are ready to show us your new plaything, go over to the Hall Of Fame section and start a new thread for your van. Then you can have us all in fits of laughter as you show us what you are doing with the van!! ;D ;D
cheers, Al.

Hi everyone, We have recently joined the caravanning world after purchasing a Franklin 1976 van from a friend who lucky for us is a keen renovator of old Ford cars. He has worked his magic and restored the chassis complete with all associated bits and pieces. He purchased it from the original owners who by the number of hooks and towel rails had used it extensively. We have been adding our personal touches to the interior without disturbing the classic fit out and are looking forward to our maiden voyage in the next few weeks. Our trouble is finding an insurer. Can anyone offer advice on this? Showard ;D

I give up on the insurance, it was way to much hard work. I bought a lock thing from supercheap that goes on the coupling with a massive paddlock. Insurance paid, lol

Thanks for the links Al. I will try NRMa and GIO and see how we go. Do you have any advice on TV aerials and mirrors? I have searched on line but the range is overwhelming. Won't be traveling too far off road but want something that is consistent and doesn't cost the earth.

G'day showard, TV aerials?? Once again you've come to the right place! ;D But before you click on the following link, make sure you've got some good headache tablets handy. You're gonna need 'em after you've read all this techo stuff : T.V. Antenna'sBear in mind that the info in the thread was posted in 2009, so some of the aerials may not be available anymore. ---------------------------- Mirror advice? Yep...don't break 'em. Seven years back luck! The ones I use are the type that fit on the existing mirrors with the rubber straps. They work well for me, but my poptop is only 6ft 6ins wide. If your Franklin is 7ft or wider, you'll probably have to go for the type that fits on the door or the mudguards (sort of like these ones). Other people on the forum can tell you what has worked well for them. cheers, Al.

Hi Showard, Just in regards to Insurance, I had the same problem with my van. No one was interested in a caravan that was 30 yrs & over:( Then a mate of mine put me onto CIL INSURANCE. www.cilinsurance.com.au/Caravan insurance is pritty much what they do, gave me the agreed cover I was after & were the cheapest! Cheers Gman

G'day peter92, and welcome to the forum! ;D
It'll be interesting to see a photo of your van. I know the Ambassador models in the late 1960s had a chassis number starting with "E", but I've not seen one ending in 'E', so I'm keen to see what your van looks like.
There's lots of advice available on the forum for anyone doing a restoration. All you have to do is ask the questions! ;D
cheers, Al.

Thanks Atog I'm starting to find my way around this forum and enjoying reading all the info about caravans and very grateful to all the members for their advice. Only wished I had found this site before we purchased our van ... but then again we never planned to buy a Classic ... we kind of did it by accident, having been advertised as a 1980 van that came with a 1978 annex and the code for 1977 on the A frame Subbie ;D

Hi all, I/we have joined this forum after some lurking around, hadn't joined yet as we didn't have a van, well that is about to be rectified. We are just about to take delivery of a 16'6 maybe 17' Viscount Duralvan. From what I have been reading here it should be a Royal from around 69 to 70, Chassis no A4910. Will start a new thread when we get it home.
Cheers Gavo.

Hi and thanks Yellowsubmarine This is our second Viscount we once had a 22' Royal approx 76 we kept in storage and sold about 4 years ago. The new classic van has arrived after a long and trialling tow of 2km ;D, that's how far from home it was. I know it was only a short trip but it towed just as easy as my camper trailer. I have taken some pics and uploaded them to photo bucket, just haven't got a round to starting a new thread yet, maybe I am scared you all will keep hounding me for progress pics. So far I have checked the 40 year old fridge still works, 240v does, yay, just need to check the gas side. Chassis, drawer-bar and running gear have minimal surface rust, this van has spent its life in western QLD so mostly dry weather. However water has found its way to the wall panels mostly delaminated but no dry rot, floor appears to be in very good condition so far. Needs two windows . Our plan is to strip and refit to suit our family for long tours, more on that in the thread to follow.

Hi all, iam new to this caravaning thingy! But I am also very excited! We just purchased our first project, I believe it is a quest caravan, with double axle, in very good condition for a 30+ year old van! I have decided to join this site hoping to find out more about our van. I have searched high and low on the net trying to find info on vintage quest caravans, but have had no luck so far. Would really appreciate any info regarding best place for minor repairs etc.... I live in the western suburbs of Melbourne Victoria. Oh, forgot to mention, I could not find a chassis number anywhere on the van, any ideas with regards on how to reg when the time comes? Cheers. Jodie.

Hi Jodie and welcome,
This is a great site and I am sure someone will be able to answer all your questions. One thing I know they will ask for is some photos to help them identify your van.
Good luck with the project.
regards Jean

Hi y'all. I recently bought an old Cabana mk 10.5 ( that's what the old sticker/paint says) for a good price in south oz. since have travelled approx 800 k's with it, and lovin it. have already done a few things to it to suit my life style. At the moment it is a bit dodgy due to some REALLY crappy attempts at (cough) repairs on it, so i will be looking for some bits for it.

Hi all, I'm new to the caravan thingy too, after having a camper trailer for several years and deciding that with old age just around the corner I needed a bed to fall into that I didn't have to first build a shelter around we(hubby and I) bought an old Viscount. We were told it was a 82 or 84 but have since found out that it is a 78 which is fine. We've only been away for a two night stay at Princetown for New Year so far as the gas system needed checking out which is being done now.We have family in Queensland and I'm looking forward to getting there this year sometime.
Cheers Lew

Hi Lew, welcome to the forum, 78 is a good year for a Viscount 77 is even better ;D They have lots of good storage and comforts albeit on the cosy side ... cubby houses for adults I'm thinking, but I hope you have as much fun as we are with our old 70's van. Look forward to your photos and look after your old girl as she'll give you many years of enjoyment Subbie

G'day, I am the proud owner of a 78(?)16 ft Glendale. It is a 6 berth and an absolute dog inside. Currently being used as storage untill I finish restoring our farm house. It tows very well and I am looking forward to tackling it.
My first van was a 74 Millard. I think it was about 30ft long. It had 4 bunks, bar, central kitchen and rear bedroom. All up 8 berth. I had a full size annex and towed it from Melbourne to Bomaderry back in the 80's It was very comfortable. regards David
