G'day All, Went hunting on the internet today for insurance coverage for the Millard. Tried AAMI, since all of our other insurances are with them, but during an attempt to get a website quote, they only allow a manufacturing date of vans back to 1981. Tried the GIO website, but for vans you have to ring them for a quote. My first question: "Do you insure caravans made in 1977? That is, ones that are 33 years old?""Yes", she says. "How much do you want to insure it for?" "Ummm...gees, I dunno. Would $10,000 be too much?""Ok, $10,000. Does it have an annexe?" "Yep.""How much do you want to insure the annexe for?" "Ummm...gees, I think they're about $1500 for a new one, so make it $1500.""How old is the annexe?" "Ummm...gees, I dunno. Maybe about 10 years old I guess.""Ok, a year 2000 annexe. Do you want the $10,000 cover to include the annexe, or have extra cover for the annexe?" "Ummm...maybe we'll include it eh?""Ok, $10,000 cover for the caravan and the annexe. That'll be $158.25 for one year's premium. Contents cover of $500 maximum is included in the policy. Excess is $200 plus another $300 for an "aged caravan." (pre-1985) "So, you pay the first $500 of any claim. We'll send all the paperwork out to you, but you're covered as of now. Have a nice day!" "Thanks!!"-------------------------------------- As you can see, I was really knowledgeable at my end of the phone. However, the whole process was very quick and easy, and the premium seems to be good value. A few questions to the forum: 1.) How much does a new annexe actually cost? (Hope that's not a 'how long is a piece of string' type question .) 2.) What would be a reasonable amount for contents coverage in a caravan? 3.) Is this premium really good value for the sum insured?? When the paperwork comes, we can adjust any of the figures on the forms, and they'll adjust the premium accordingly. cheers, Al.

Hi everyone, I've had a similar experience with insuring both my van and WRX, as mentioned it's not easy getting insurance for 30+ year old van's, WRX's are probably even harder. Anyway to the point... What I've found is when you actually get your policy it will have the wording $XXXXX or market value (which ever is lesser). Now I'm not saying the previously mentioned insurer's policy states this as I've never had experience with them but please be careful. In my case the insurer of my van was happy to work out a premium for me and take my hard earned cash based on my estimated $7500 replacement, but only ever had the intention of paying out (in case of a write off) $3000 So yeah, I was getting ripped off, paying too much premium!!! Very similar story on the WRX, had a premium based on "agreed" value only to find the "or market value, which ever is lesser" clause was in the policy. So it may be worth a check just to find out in the event of a write off are you going to get your 10G's or are you going to get their idea of "market value" Hope I haven't confused you guys and girls but I've just learned (probably by owning a modified WRX) that insurance policy's can sometimes be misleading Chris

G'day All, I've moved this thread over from the General section. We are still working our way through the insurance coverage process for the Millard. We received the paperwork last week, and following Chris's comments above, I went through the Policy booklet with a fine toothed comb. On page 26 was the section: "When your vehicle is a total loss" followed by a paragraph which said, "If we accept your claim and decide your vehicle is a total loss or your vehicle is not found after being stolen, the amount we pay you depends on the market value or amount shown as the sum insured on your Certicificate of Insurance." Fair enough...but what determines whether it is 'market value' or 'amount insured'?? On to the call centre. The girl read the page and wasn't sure. On hold for a minute while she checked with the supervisor. Answer came back "It depends on the assessor. If the assessor thinks the market value of the van and the insured value are pretty close together, you get the insured value. If the van has deteriorated, or wasn't worth the value to begin with, you get the market value." Me: "So, the onus is on the person insuring to get the market value and insured (agreed) value pretty close??""Yep." So, we had a rethink about the amount we've insured for. Never seen a van from the Classic era sell for $8500 (my valuation), so we lowered the amount. Majority of Classic vans I've followed have sold for between $3000 and $5000. Not many restored Classics coming on the market to establish a 'market value'. We lowered it to $5500 for the van, plus $1500 cover for the annexe. Annual premium fell from $158 for $10,000 to $118 for $7000, a drop of $40. To me, there's no point in paying for extra insured value, when you are never going to get that value anyway (as Chris points out). ----------------------------------------------- The other point I raised with the call centre was that the paperwork didn't show the 'aged caravan excess' of $300. Again, she couldn't give an answer, so off to the supervisor once more. Response was that they didn't understand why I'd been given that information, because there's no such thing as 'aged caravan excess'. The only time there's an additional $300 excess is when an underage driver is driving the vehicle. So, was the first girl I originally rang right?, or was the second girl right?? The first girl was quite specific about the 'aged excess' applying to vans pre-1985. Revised paperwork for the lower insured value is coming this week, so I'll double-check whether the extra excess is showing there or not. If not, they've got buckleys of me ever paying it if they've made a mistake. cheers, Al.
