G'Day all' Below is a photo of a Delta caravan which I designed and help build way back in 1979 in New Zealand. there were only about 40 of these vans built before the Company folded in 1980. the lay-out was typical of the period, front fold down table (for double bed) central kitchen and twin long-running beds at the rear. there were no roof hatches in these vans, the top side half-windows acted as vents, every van had a extra window fitted at the front on both sides and full width windows both front and rear. the frame was made from treated pine with every joint half checked, glued and screwed, the walls were made in a jig then attached upright onto the pre-floored chassis, the roof was made as a separate item then lowered onto the walls, then glued and screwed into place. the photo below was taken on a recent return visit to N.Z. the van was then 25 years old....still looks in pretty good condition. kiwijim ;D

Hi Jim,
I concur with Atog 100%
The delta in the pics appears to have low side walls, looks like they would've been 2-3 inches below the floor line at least? presumably alos drop axle? Now at all like vans of that era here in Aus. I think cost cutting here had seen the demise of that a decade earlier. Cheers, Classic

G'Day Holligan, to answer your thoughts regarding the reason for the demise of the Delta, firstly.... the sides walls were no lower than the average caravan, they were placed on top of the floor then the aluminum was taken down over the chassis side rails and folded underneath, the photo does not do justice for the van as it is sitting in long grass and on a lean. the Delta was fitted with a straight axle with leaf springs, they were fitted with 14in HT Holden wheels. The real demise of the company was caused by the rising cost of fuel at the time, people were going for smaller vans ie:- 12-14ft Delta were building 16ft, by the management finally realized the reason for lack of sales it was to late. I could see it coming so did the only thing possable....bailed out a month before the doors closed, at least I walked out with wages not like many others. cheers kiwijim ;D
