Hey MT Well it certainly looks pretty good to me. If you are copying the original, using as thick or thicker box section and doing your welds properly. Can't see how you could go wrong. ;D ;D ;D ;D Not having done this type of work myself I'd do a direct copy just to be on the safe side. Some of the welder/boilermaker types on the site should be able to give you a better idea. Keep at it. Cheers Atog

i traced the old one on the garage floor thats what the tape is for so i could copy as close as possible although the original only had the two sections bumped up the tubing from 75 x35 to 75 x50

good on ya mickeyt
certainly something that I would not take on. Totally beyond my skill level.
It seems to have a lot more steel in it then any others I have seen.
Keep the photos coming bobt

wow!! I gather you have replaced some of the chassis rails too.
Welding under there would not be a lot of fun.

Hooley Dooley, mickeyt!! That's one humongous set-up now!! What's the total weight of the van and bike stuff now?? And what did you do about the ball weight of the total load? It'll be interesting to hear how the van travels with all that additional weight on the back. cheers, Al.

Wow!! my thought too. When ya said a bike rack I did not expect it to be that sort of bike. So how did it go? Any sway? That strikes me as a lot of weight on the rear end! If it all goes well for this trip do a careful inspection of all the new welds. Hope it all worked out for you bobt

What a set up! Can't see the number plate on the van with the bike there. Might have some trouble in NSW. Would have to check up on the rules for van number plates but I know if you have any kind of rack on the car that obscures the number plate you must either reposition the plate, or have another number plate (the RTA sells a bike rack plate) in plain view on the rear most point of the load. When I put my pushbike rack on the car I have to remove the number plate from the car and reposition it.

well got back from the Honda adventure rally very stiff and sore old dirt bikers never die they just crash more often but had a great time van towed perfect up to about 95 km above that on down hill runs with no throttle on would start to sway a little so i just kept her back to about 90 and all was good got to admit it sure was nice to be tucked up in bed on the sat night while it got down to minus 5 out side i was snug as a bug in a rug all my fellow competitors shivering in the morning scraping the ice of their swags who says getting old makes you soft just smarter i reckon

My a-frame totally stuffed and rusted through, had to do something about it, so time to see a specialist and get it replaced. the only point it was welded to the chassis on both sides the start, and what a start, this will take a while! painted and ready for accosories. made it longer to make easier to back up and to fit a toolbox for annex and hoses etc finished and tows well, easy to back now side view added some jacking points as well as they had nowhere to jack van up. these work well with the hi-lift jack also added four alko drop down stabilisers. these are great!!

well the rust is too bad to ignore so i have to start again here is my progress so far any comments / tips apprececiated so what do you think am i heading in thr right direction ? I'm a pretty bad welder .... But to my eyes there is no penetration at all in those welds .... Nowhere near enough heat or wire speed I'd say. Is that gasless wire ? I'd suggest grinding them back and trying again. Or getting a licensed welder in to weld up something that so structurally important! seeya Shane L.

Hey Shane It has been over 4 years since 'mickeyt' has posted on here, who knows how it worked out. Bobt Oh missed the date on that .... I'm very concerned about that one falling off. If the welding from above is like that, I can only imagine what is holding the drawbar on from underneath where it's welded upside down laying on your back. I've done heaps of welding over the years. There is still no way I'd weld a drawbar on. I'd get the welding from above fine. But struggle welding upside down. I can't get the welder settings exact enough not to have the weld pool fall down and cover me with molten nuts (you should see how quick you can jump out from under a car when you have red hot molten metal trying to burn it's way through you .... Ask me how I know ..... ). seeya, Shane L.
