Hi there, just to let you know I've been collating chassis numbers for Millards and Yorks as part of the Millard and York Owners Facebook page, some of them I've collected from this forum and many of the members in the group have contributed theirs, some have also found dates written/stamped in their vans hidden behind wall panels. I only have around a hundred numbers so far for the 60s and 70s but it's enough to narrow down other numbers to within a year or two of their make. Members of the group have access to the spreadsheet which only shows the chassis number and general external features, there is no personal information. I am happy to have anyone send me their numbers either to add to the collation or for info on their number. Shelley Hi Shelly, Next time I'm at my block I'll grab the chassis number of my 16' Millard... In the meantime do original number plates assist? Mine is Vic K53-315 Deciphering chassis numbers must be challenging.. I imagine 'M' is for Millard .

Hi Boomer, the numbers were consecutive from 1962/3 - 1978 so the more I can collect with dates, the easier they are to work out. Most of the dates have been found written behind the wall panel next to the front window so presumably the date and chassis number could be seen at a glance on the production line before the cladding went on. Yes, M for Millard and Y for York as they were in the same factory, then there's also MM and YM for the poptops - Millard micro/mini and York micro/mini and also T for the wind-up campers.
I'm not sure about the number plates, I just had a look on Vic roads rego check site but that plate isn't coming up so it looks like it hasn't been used in a while. Wall art for the shed perhaps? I don't know if they can re-instate it.
Cheers
Shelley

For a fee (around $25?) VicRoads can do a manual search of their old registration number archives which may disclose dates of first registration, tare, colour, chassis number, etc. It may also draw a blank! Apparently they have records stored on old generation systems (microfische, etc) which is why the fee applies. There may be similar services provided in other states? I intend to apply for a data search on my 70's Viscount Royal if I can't find the chassis number during reno. Cheers, Arthur

Vic Trailer/Caravan plates were formerly issued in the following series and format. G00 000 - L99 999 Up to 1977 Black White (I've found reference to a 'G' plate issued in '49 and 'H' plates issued in '59) A00 000 - E55 999 1977-9/1994 Black White Lol.. rusty 'wall art'

Hi again... my Millard Chassis number is M33833 . Going by previous posts, this would make it around '73/74 ? I also took note of the original retailer.. Hec And Peter McKenzie's World of Caravans and Homes... Now closing down after 47 years in business. www.mckenziecaravans.com.auWonder if they still have sales records from the seventies?

Hec And Peter McKenzie's World of Caravans and Homes... Now closing down after 47 years in business. www.mckenziecaravans.com.auWonder if they still have sales records from the seventies? When i used to run a business in the CBD, in the 1980s, i used to enjoy the ramblings of sales folks. One of my faves was buying in bulk. Working out my office space per square metre per month many stationary items would cost almost twice what the saving may have been, just housing it let alone the cash flow issue. After 4 years i ran out of spaces for new cabinets to store closed files ( pre computer being a property- business job so retaining working files important) I ended up grabbing a storage unit accross town & created an archive there. Most small businesses had to keep records for 7 years & now some only 5 but the fact remains that space & cost of storage is an issue. Car & Caravan sales places seem to always have huge parking and a small shack for an office so keeping anything longer than the legislated time becomes a costly drama that does not put food on the table.

The Millard kitchenette has the same layout as mine and exactly the same lino tiles! I'll go with '74. Thanks . I doubt they'll have any sales records too, unless the business owner is a hoarder. Then again, I have found many an old item in places I've worked, including boxes of archives that got pushed to the back somewhere and forgotten.

Looking at the site on google earth view the office shacks are about 4 caravan widths x 1 caravan length, not sure about too many boxes hidden up the back. Now all Jayco so not able to know where McKenzie was.

It would not surprise me in the least if they still have records going back to the days when they first started. If you were keen you could give them a call. Never know what might pop up..

Just saw the post that this conversation was relocated here so I’ll post my quote here then:
Hi Shelley,
I was wondering if you have any info to work out what year M49968 would be? I’m looking to buy this one and I need to write the year of manufacture on the unregistered vehicle permit application to tow it home. It’s a 16 foot Millard caravan with a blue stripe. The ad says 1976 but then I asked the owner and he thinks it’s actually 1978. Looking at previous posts, could be any of these, even 1977. We are planning a full gut and refit so hopefully can work out the exact year once we pull off the lining etc but it would be great to put something on the paperwork for now. Thanks in advance,
Diana
