Recently bought 5 x HT hub caps for $50.00, half the asking on ebay, not perfect but good, The white paint was buggered, so i paint stripped them back to chrome, now I'm thinking if I want to re-instate the white??? Have any members attempted the project???

Did a set of HR hubcaps by painting the middle circle (rest of the hubcap masked off)I think I used enamel with hardener then let set hard in the sun for a couple of days.
When the paint is nice and hard, mask the hubcap centre with a good tape pressed well into and around the logo then mask up the rest of the rim so not to scratch the outer. Gently use fine wet and dry sandpaper to rub through the tape in the centre badge on the raised logo and then gently work on the logo with 1200 wet and dry rub down almost right through the paint. Stop remove the tape in the centre with wax and grease remover then use a cutting compound or aggressive cut polish to take the paint back far enough on the edges of the bare metal/chrome centre logo until your happy.
Well... that's the way I did it at the time.

Some where I've read that you can paint the area & wipe over with tissue paper, exposing the high spots? ? Not sure of the process.

It will still look good from standing beside the van.

I dont want a "quick looking job" just at the moment I've got my hands full with the resto' I will get to them in good time & do the job properly. I'll bet GMH had a great quick system??? Any GMH workers here or have mates in the industry? they would have been painting hundreds every week. Ooohhh why do we have to get more modern every day

The caps sitting on the end of the bench, got to me so I searched the net & found this little nugget from the VW forum How to Paint Hubcap centres
These caps in good condition are now pulling $100 on ebay, so I feel pretty good with my purchase of 5 for $50.00 not mint but OK. I found Wattyl a good paint, do not use a fast dry,eg British paints, & acetone produced a sharper edge to thinners.

Great to see the old skills st work,"ragging" choice of rag material as well as thinners is also important for the cleanest edge, good ol turps gives a very clean edge in hotter weather as it allows the enamel to flow set, too much though & urgh! Chrome is a great place to learn.
