I have a subaru forester 2001, Anyone towed with this car? towing capacity of car is 1300kg -thats with brakes (but is that any brakes? or is that electric brakes?) i was told by a guy at the subaru dealer that without brakes its probably 550kg i can tow. Any one know? i realise i will have to get a small van but will i need to get electric brakes fitted too? or are override brakes ok in this regard? (should i have posted this in tow cars?) cheers, julia

Hi Julia,
I would start by having a look at the owners manual (if you have one) as that would be the only way you could be 100% confident of the towing capacity. I had a quick look at redbook and they state 500kg is the max (whether braked or unbraked). I dont believe this though as an article I found on the NRMA website says your car has a towing capacity of 1300kg. Any brake, whether it be electric or mechanical (which most classic vans have) fit into the category of 'braked'. 500-550 is probably a safe bet for towing something 'unbraked'.
