We recently purchased a 1979 Viscount Pop top. We live in Tasmania. I am planning on giving the van a nice bright look whist keeping some of the original features. I've already found some much needed advice on here already. Can't wait to keep exploring

Hey everyone!
Love the page we had no idea there was such a following on the old vans!
Just bought our first van a 77 millard (there is no plate near the jockey wheel) with a fair bit of leaks and rot around the pop top, it has alley wall framing but timber roof, it will take a few steps to get it back to sturdy condition, im a carpenter so with everyones advice im sure it will be fine!
The window rubbers will need replacing too and some are smashed any reason not to use perspex?
Has anyone replaced the timbers that hold the pop top with box aluminum say 18x70 or similar?
Has anyone repaired around the pop top without stripping the roof, only the cieling sheeting?
Also i was going to remove the double bed frame and make better storage underneath should i tip it or does one of you millard enthusiasts want it?
Thanks in advance
Steve

I've already found some much needed advice on here already. Can't wait to keep exploring We also own a 1979 Viscount Pop Top with bunk beds at the rear, I converted the fold out bed/ lounge to a double bed with storage underneath via gas struts, Installed a 12volt system complete with 280amp/hr batteries , 200w solar panel and a back up Honda 1KVA Generator, On your trip up to Bunderberg and back to Frankston we stop at free camp sites guided by CamperMate we saw plenty of really nice classic caravans, great trip with the family , I'm hoping the kids are at the ago they will remember this as the first of many big trips the main reason we bought this van, we try and get away on the long weekends within VIC. I enjoy owning this van over my previous and much newer van, hard to Describe just a feeling. I hope you really enjoy owning a Classic Caravan See you out there

HI all, As many others have said, I didn't know there was such a following for Classic Vans . We have just purchased a 1978 Millard Pop Top with MM3048 on A Frame. Al from Vintage Vans forum told me to come here for clarification of Age etc. Looking at doing some Mods, unfortunately it isn't anything like original condition, lots of changes done to it over the years. Looking forward to following along on this forum and getting some tips as I'm new to Caravans in general. Cheers Greg

Hi y'all, just joined today,I live on the edge of a river on my property in a 26' millard, & I love it! I have 2 other caravans as well I have actually moved out of my cabin into the caravan about 8 months ago. I bought this van about 2 years ago, it's had a colourful melamine refit @ some point, which I is not my preference but it's alot more open than original interior,I have removed linoleum tiles & figured out a great way to do that with a little butane blowtorch & a wide paint scraper, heat up tile from above, which makes glue soft, then lift with scraper. The raw plywood floor looks pretty cool but Id like to install a thin bamboo floor @ some point,I have installed floor to ceiling window @ end of bed,10' cypress bench & gradually been fixing all the cracked & missing window panes. My most recent mod has been a woodstove, which makes it very cosy@ night. My next planned mod is big skylight over hatch. cheers! Russ

Russ Howdy Russ, Welcome aboard, It sounds like you will have your hands full with three vans, the good old Millards were in a class of their own and there is surprisingly still a lot of them around, just a word of caution on using that wood stove inside your van, be mindful that it will give off Carbon Monoxide ,a poisonous gas if it should escape into the van, if I was you, I would install a Detector in the van and check that the stove has 100% ventilation to the outside, before you use it especially over night, hate to hear a new Member never woke up again, all the best with your renovations, why not start your own page on renovations as you go ? with some pictures will create a lot of interest. Cheers K.J.

G'day everyone,
I live in North East Victoria, and have been lurking on this forum for many years, but it's time to get more active. I've been caravaning all my life, so "vintage vans" were new when I started! My father built a 15ft bondwood caravan the year I was born, and as he was a teacher we traveled in it most school holidays. So when I married and had a family, it was natural to get a caravan. We purchased a 1974? model 18ft Chesney President in 1985, which we still have and is about to undergo an internal renovation to make it more suitable for "empty nesters". In 2010 we decided to try a smaller caravan to do the Top End and the Kimberley, so got a 1978 model 16ft Viscount Explorer (pop top). It has been, and still is, a great van - but we're looking forward to the updated Chesney. And now, as we have classic and vintage cars, we've acquired a 10ft Sandrover Special (pop top) which I will be seeking more information about (I'm assuming it was built around 1974 - 1978). This will be used for Car Club events and short intrastate trips.
I will start threads on each of the vans in due course.
Mark.

Hi Dizzy, Welcome to the Classic Forum. If you google canvas mold treatment, I,m sure there will be various treatments available. Bear in mind you usually need to re-apply a waterproof coating after a mold treatment. Cheers Brent
