Hi all, I am after some advice or past experience when it comes to doing a mechanical override brake to electric conversion. I have a 1972 Viscount 19ft with duel overlay axles. I am looking at installing 10β Alko backing plates and drums, so I would have to remove and re-weld mounting flanges to the axle to bolt the new backing plates up to. I am wondering if the new drum face on the front axle will sit in line with the un braked hub face on the rear axle? Or should I bite the bullet and buy 2 new axles complete with mounting plates, also lifting the van 40-44mm? Any advice would be most welcomed.

Hi mate, I have done exactly this to my 1969 Viscount. The mounts need to be located in a different spot but itβs all quite doable if you have good engineering practices and can weld. I documented the conversion in my thread - hang 10 Iβll link it in here. Edit - here it is, I posted in another thread and my post is about all that seems to be left - ditzygypsy.proboards.com/post/40807Yes, my welding looks aweful but itβs strong. Done several thousand KM with it since the conversion and they work great. Much cheaper than a new axle. Most of the details are in there - it did increase the track by 20mm - 10mm per side but it still tows great and the wheels still fit under the guards no dramas. Sing out if you want any more detail. ππ Oh, and you must post some pics of your van! What condition is it in, what plans etc? π

Cheers Snoops, exactly the info I was after, much appreciated. Just one question, Is that 50mm tube you used over the stub axle? I am new to forums so I will post some photos shortly when I work out the correct process. My wife has made an Instagram page for the reno @shirleymaythecaravan if you want to check that out for now. Cheers.

Will check that out. Yes, I think it was 50mm thick walled pipe - I had it lying around so not 100% sure what it was sorry.

Very Original, body looks like it has been cared for, definitely fit electrics.
(My heart still takes a flutter when I see a nice Viscount)
