I would like to know the approximate weight of a Viscount and a Franklin 16 footer (no pop up models) vans. Plan to tow it with a Magna which has a limit of 1.5 tons and 150 Kg ball weight with a weight distribution hitch. I would like to tow not more that 1.2 tons if it is possible. Inputs are appreciated. Cheers

Personally I think you are on the edge with 16', power should be ok with a V6 but 16'of van & the car packed up will most likley go over 1.2ton.
I would think you may need heavier tyres on the rear of the car & possibly pump up shocks.

Thank you mustang for your reply. The Magna mass weight is 1509 Kg, the GVM is 1918 (payload 408 kg)and the GCM is 3268 Kg. So, if we have a payload of about 300 kg including ball weight of 90Kg that will give me a towing capacity of 1200 kg with 200 kg to spare or under the limit. Perhaps fitting Robinson coils will help to distribute more weight to the front of the car. What can be the weight of the 16 van with empty or not water tanks, 1 ton or under?

I have a 16 1/2 foot viscount supreme and it weighs in at 1800 fully loaded. It has been renovated and without water and gas and nothing loaded in its 1450kg. Its single axle. i think a pop top would be lighter.

Empty weight of a foam sandwich franklin will probably be about 800kg. WIth not a lot more for an alloy framed Viscount Any "enhancements' made to them over the years often add HUGE weight. Eg: new beds with inner spring mattresses can easily add 100kg alone! seeya, Shane L.

We had a Magna a few years ago. 3 litre V6 and towed an Olympic Debonair 13 foot caravan with it no problems on the bitumen but towing on damp grass with a slight uphill slope it was a bit tricky due to the front wheel drive train. The Debonair weighed around 1100 kgs loaded. Hope this helps.
Cheers Bob and Jacqui.

Our family has towed iwth Magnas for years. You won't have any problem with a 16'ish foot caravan. My fathers AWD verada was particularly good seeya, Shane L

Thank you guys for all the inputs, I have 3 vans to have a look, one Viscount 15 footer registered for 6000 o.n.o, one Franklin Arrow 16 rego for 4500 o.n.o and one Caravelle 16 no rego for 3700. All of them are early 1980's. I love the Franklin Caravelle but thinking about rego it will add another $1000 easy. Looks like that a Land Rover series 3 will be on the list for towing only, but I am not telling this to my lovely wife, this grand dad have to live few years more.

The Franklins weigh very little standard.
I could easily move mine around on my own.
Where abouts are you located? Rego is easier in some places than others

Have no idea about rego down that way!
Check carefully for leaks and soft spots

I have a 16' Franklin Arrow - it's original weight was quite low - around 1,000kg when I got it - empty with no gas bottles, no water, no nothing. With it now basically restored I ran it over the weigh bridge a couple of weeks back when I went camping - fully kitted up, with 2 full gas bottles, full water tank, food for a week, clothes, 2 x 100 amp deep cycle batteries, inverter, microwave, - you get the idea. It came in at a whisker over 1,400Kg with 160Kg on the nose IIRC. Really, right on the limit for your car, but there is no reason you couldn't keep one within the legal limits of your vehicle - I've just got too much crap in mine...

Distances here in Tas are short so only a 4 kg gas bottle will do. Water I carry them on jerry cans and drinking filtered water in 10lt containers from the supermarket. Once I fit solar panels and 2 batteries and other bits for the trip across to the main land the weight will be up on the limit and a good excuse to have another LR a bit more economic than my ex RRC. No microwave in mine but the Q100 Weber is a must.

Things can be done in various ways.
For the last few years we've used our van with 10L boxes of water from the supermarket for drinking, and a 20L jerry can of water for washing dishes.
When I first got the van I looked at the lighting, it works well on 240V (but is not what I'd consider safe or compliant!) but rather than figure out the 12V lighting that was installed, put a battery, charger, solar pannel, etc in I just bought some self adhesive LED lights. You touch them they turn on, touch them again they turn off.
Admittedly they consume AA batteries but they do so quite slowly and big packets of batteries from shops like Bunnings are quite cheap.
You might need to think outside of the box a bit but if you look at it more as camping in a box than a home on wheels I'm sure you'll be fine with the weights

Everyone does things differently.
A friend of mine towed his 14' Windsor all over the place behind a 2.6l (4cyl) Magna, he never had any trouble with the car.
We use our box a lot one thing we do not do is leave home without water in the tanks, I always filter it. Twice over the years we could have been caught out when the town we were staying at ran out of water.

I have found and put a deposit for a Franklin Arrow 16 footer 1977 model with registration and full length annex. All is working well, does not leak but need painting outside and the draw bar. I will do the chassis as well with Hamerlite I will also remove the windows and reseal them with marine Silka The accommodation is with four banks at the back and dinette at the front which it is not very common. We will remove the top banks and leave it as 2 single beds. I need some inputs in which is the best and specially cheap way to pain the outside of it. The stove and the original cushions have a deep orange color and I was thinking in painting a strip with that color on the side panels. U will pick up the van Sunday evening and will start a new thread with photos of it. Now I have to buy a 1.500 kg tow bar and a weight distribution hitch for the Magna.
Thank you all for the inputs, they are appreciated.

I only use Silka and if the van have an accident it will be for the repair and the insurance company to resolve the issue. having experience with boats i would not use anything else.
Shane, when I was there I have the pleasure to drive a Peugeot 403 Station wagon seating capacity for 8 unregistered and need restoration. It brought back memories. The man like to sell it just in case that you know some french car fanatic in your part of the world. My son also have the chance to drive a series 1 LR with a crane mounted at the back.
