Hi Gitano,Myarrow1 Further to your posts about painting your caravans in Wattyl gloss exterior house paint,I for one have my reservations, painted my 1968 Sandrover in same paint and found it retaining a sticky feel in warm to hot conditions,I live in North East Vic so experience hot Temps. I'm also painting a Franklin Hunter 12Ft. van at the moment, however this time I'm using Zinsser U/coat and 2 coats of Rust guard full gloss enamel, I'm aiming for the Vintage Nationals at South West Rocks in April after a full restoration on the Hunter. Cheers Wibby 38

Hi Wibby38. Yeh I did wondered about that aspect too (sticky feel), but I figure if you can paint it on a zincalume house roof, and it stays there then it should stick to my Franklin ?? I have painted the ends just above eye level to the roof. Haven't painted the actual roof with it yet. Maybe I should use something different for that ??

Wow Gitano, that's a lot of paint. How's the finish looking, using a roller ?

Wow Gitano, that's a lot of paint. How's the finish looking, using a roller ? No I use a top quality brush ($41.00 !!!!) and thin coats. So far I only used 4 lts of paint for 5 coats where I painted over the undercoat and 4 coats where I painted over the original white. Only in the roof I have done 2 coats plus the undercoat. I am painting the sides now, working on one with 3 coats and waiting for the weather to improve to apply the 4th coat. I need to do some work on the side with the door before I undercoat it. After the painting it is completed I will wait 10 days for the paint to cure before do any necessary touch up. I estimate that I will use between 8 to 10 liters of paint to finish the job.

Nice 1 Gitano. I've only used primer on surfaces where bare metal is exposed. I rubbed the whole van with medium rubbing blocks (wet). I then scrubbed it with sugar soap mix, then paint. Had a fair bit of paint come off from where I had to get the caked on moss etc off the front and rear upper panels. I reckon I will use a roller for the roof top

The first coat in the roof I have done with a roller and did not like it so the second I done it with a 3" brush and was a better cover. I have a long reach so from each side I reached the middle of the roof. The attached photo shows the difference between a section of the back of the van with 5 coats and the side with 3 .

Looking great !! I had a bit of trouble with removing the masking tape. The paint wanted to 'come away' along some of the J Mould edges so I will have some little touch ups with a fine hobby brush. I may need to run a blade along the edges before I try and peel off the tape. What colour will your stripes be ??

For the strip I would love to find the formula for the orange in the stove so the shop can tint the Solargard but if I cannot perhaps I go for a vivid red. Regarding the masking tape, do not leave it for to long, no more that 24 hours and if the paint it is thick remove it after 1/2 of applying the last coat. How you are going to mask the strip lines in yours?

Cool thanks or the tape tip. Our stripes will be a Teal /semi gloss colour.... I haven't painted the RHS as yet as i wanted to keep the stripes visible if I have trouble finding them on the painted LHS. Plenty of newspaper masked around the area and I should be right to go. I've got 2 spray pack enamel cans (good quality), so I hope it will be ok over the Solagard........I'm no spray painter but I'm pretty happy so far...
i also found that the sugar soap mix really cleaned up the Franklin emblems up, too.....

I do not know if you have a technique to avoid paint bleeding on the masking tape when you do the strips but just in case I am telling you mine. 1)Put the masking type in place 2) paint over the edges of the tape with the white Solargard that you have use. 3) Allow the paint to dry as recommendations depending on the weather (2 hours perhaps) This will make the white paint bleed and seal the tape so the color used on the strips will not bleed and you will finish with a clean line. 4) Paint the strips with the color selected 5) Remove tape with the paint still wet perhaps 15 minutes or little more depending on the weather.
Cheers

How you are going to mask the strip lines in yours? Do you have an Inspirations paint shop close? They have awesome range, like bunnings of colours, start with a phone pic that matches the stove, may need more or less light to get it, then go to store & check swatches that lead to the colour code. A sample pot does one side of the thick stripe 3 coats.

Thanks mate, there is a shop in Moonah ( Tas) where I can take the oven door and they will making the paint and put it on spray pack but I do not know how that paint will react over a Solargard base.

When I was searching for my paint for the stripes, I noticed that all of them seemed to be enamel in spray packs, so I'm hoping for no problems over the Solagard..... One way to find out I suppose, lol !!!
for some reason, I thought that you can use an enamel over the top of an acrylic, but cannot use acrylic over the top of an enamel......

In my van Solargard worked very well over the White Night Rust Guard undercover.

Enamel over sublatex can be an issue, lots of fine sanding to key in & still expect orange peel& or cracks as the solagard heats and expands at a very different rate to hot and cold.

They should be able to mix up solargard to pretty much any colour in any brand of domestic acrylic paint range. The tinters are mostly universal, it just might come out a tiny bit off the exact colour. My house is painted in Wattyl Solargard, but the colour is out of the Taubmans range. Solargard is funny though, it darkens noticeably as it dries, so the wet paint may not look quite right.

Hi Tim and Gitano. I was chatting to a spray painter mate, and he told me NOT to use an enamel over Solagard Acrylic ! Reckons it will blister up. Must use acrylic and reckons paint shops can mix up acrylic and supply in aerosol cans.....Spose there's no reason why I couldn't just buy a 1 litre can and use my spray gun ? Would prefer cans though........Easier

I dunno. I certainly agree that you shouldn't paint enamel over acrylic, but the only acrylic that I've seen in spray cans is automotive acrylic lacquer, which uses heavy duty solvents which will also probably react with the solargard. If you've painted the main part in solargard, I'd suggest doing the stripe in it as well.
The one other possibility might be one of the newer water based pressure packs. I've only used it to touch up white furniture and it was great for that, but I don't know how well it would stand up to UV outdoors and the range of colours is pretty limited.

Caught up with a paint shop yesterday. Explained my situation and showed them what i was wanting to use for my stripes - Rust-Oleon X2. They said it will be fine over Solagard. I also spoke with Rust-Oleon Tech Support. Reckons you mainly come across issues when using Auto and Ind paints, not a house paint such as Solagard.

I also spoke with Rust-Oleon Tech Support. Reckons you mainly come across issues when using Auto and Ind paints, not a house paint such as Solagard. OK so spray painters & sales reps still not explaining the potential issue, raised above. Think of a thermostat, usually made of bi metal = two very different types that when heated or cooled expand/ contract at a different rate, that causes a bend to make or break contact. Your Alloy caravan coated with a plastic stretchy paint. ( sub latex acrylic/ solargard) will be able to stretch and shrink better than the alloy it is painted onto. Any coloured paint will naturaly get hotter when exposed to sun. So any paint that is stiffer than what it is being painted on will want to lift. ( the spary paint dude said blister) Even before that many solvent based paints will want to crack when they cannot expand like the undercoat does, (zebra stripes cracking) depending on your prep the different paint may just decide to orange peel react, if not 100% keyed in. You can put acrylic over enamel but generally not the other way around. So get back to the X2 guy and get a spec at what the expansion rate at various heat temps are for their product, if it is too robust then you may find that it and your solargard lift off together from the alloy, on a hot day or extreme cold. NOTE i went cheap and used an acrylic sample pot colour match, for my side stripe... but over the original enamel. It will be really easy to peel off later if i, or the new owner, want to get serious with a colour mix & enamel.
