G'day brejen, and welcome to the forum! ;D
You have to locate the chassis number on the drawbar, probably just next to the jockey wheel, and tell us what that number is. We know what the numbering system was for full-sized Viscounts in the 1970s, but I'm not 100% sure that the poptops followed the same numbering system.
If you can tell us what the number is on your van, we'll have a better idea of what it's age might be. The Viscount sticker above the front windows puts its age around the late 1970s or early 1980s.
cheers, Al.

Hi brejen, looks like the Viscount poptops didn't get a letter. Based on the our understanding of the numbering system, the first 8 in your number would mean 1978, with the remaining 8063 being the number of chassis built that year. I reckon with such a high number as that, your van would have to have been built towards the very end of 1978. I don't think Viscount got up to the magic 9999 figure in any year, but 8063 would be one of the highest numbers I'm aware of. By all means post some photos of the work you've done. But start a new thread in the Hall Of Fame section, put the Subject as 1978 Viscount Poptop (plus the length), and then put in as much info and photos as you wish. That way we can keep track of your van in the future. If you want to add multiple photos into the one post, you'll have to learn how to use Photobucket. If you add the photos via the "Attachment" option (as you've done so far), you can only add one to each post. For more than one, you have to create a new Reply in the thread for each individual photo. It's a real nuisance. For more info on how to use Photobucket, click on this thread: POSTING PHOTOScheers, Al.

G'day viscount6116, and welcome to the forum! ;D
Gees, that is one HUGE Viscount! Never seen one sitting so high up from the road like that one. Must have been specially made for an off-road journey, or travelling around the outback.
The number 96116 should be a 1979 build. Is there a letter in front of the number? Maybe an "S" for the Supreme version?
The gas compliance date might have been fitted when the van was actually sold. The caravan industry slumped severely in the late 1970's and early 1980's, so vans weren't being sold in any hurry or in any great numbers. When I did my research in the Sydney newspaper archives, I could find only ONE advertiser in the newspaper for caravans in 1980, and that was Viscount. And even they were only advertising a couple of times during that year.
cheers, Al.

G'day folks, I've just purchased, a supposedly '73 Viscount. I'm just trying to nail it down. It seems to have features of late 60's and early 70's vans which is why I've posted here. It's a bit damaged on the front but it seems to be leak free and relatively original for 40 +/- years old. It's a bit of a conundrum.... The blue stripes have been re-painted over an original pale green/dark green colour scheme of the same pattern. I've scoured this thread and found that it has the same interior as some of the late 60's vans but the paint and logo configuration don't seem to match that, according to what I have read here. It is a white Viscount Duralvan according to the painted over and very faded logos. Front Back The ID number on the draw bar is missing the first 2 characters as the tow joint has been replaced at some stage. 668A is all I've got. I posted this on the Vintage van site as well - I think this one seems to cross over. Thanks in advance. Any ideas welcome. Friendy

G'day friendy, and welcome to the forum! ;D
I was never absolutely sure about which year these Viscounts belonged to, but your photos and chassis number suggest this painted side design most likely belongs to 1971. What confuses me is that your van has the old "Duralvan" sticker on it, whereas the other Viscounts I've got pictures of with your painted pattern on them have the newer Viscount sticker. See Reply #3 on Page 1 of this thread.
Your van definitely won't be earlier than 1971, so it's not a Vintage van.
I've often wondered whether this particular painted design was released as a "Special Edition" van. They seem to have been available for a relatively short period of time.
cheers, Al.

Hello griswalds As Al will verify, your chassis number defines your van as a Royal (R) built in 1976 (6 is the first digit). The main difference between the Royal and the Supreme that I am aware of were the level of 'appointments' and the interior door / drawer trims - The Royal trims tended to match the lighter panels, where the Supreme tended to contrast the trims. As so many variables were evident during the 70's - it makes it difficult to pick the differences between the models Chris

Hi Al, (and others), Bought and brought home a supposed 1974 Viscount Royal, at Easter. Reading the info here I'm not too sure that's what she is. She has the viscount and royal stickers, but the chassis number appears to be PV72962. Assuming that the "P" began its life as an "R", there is still the "V" to consider, and the first number would indicate it is a 1977. The interior cupboards are the same finish as that in Keelz', it has a solid green painted stripe at window height. The windows are all windout, with the front one being made up of the two, but the back being a fixed single, and the side being domed. It also has a four season hatch. As soon as I get home in daylight, I will take some pics and post them, but in the meantime any information, or guesses would be more than welcome. Thanks! Random PS she is supposedly 17' and I call her the Queen Mary.

G'day Margaret,
I was hoping someone with a Viscount would have answered you by now, but everybody must be working hard on their vans.
Have you looked at what size tyre is on the van? I've got half an idea that the earlier Viscounts had 13 inch tyres, and the rims were Holden wheels.
Hopefully someone will come along shortly and tell you whether I'm fibbing or not.
cheers, Al.

Just as a bit of help with rims if you have a wrecker handy take a wheel with you and find out which you have as it was common to find ford owners would have ford wheels and holden owners would get holden wheels or even valiant rims fitted on new vans by the owners of that brand but the majority where ford or holden. Most of which you can then get 14" rims as they are easier to buy tyres for nowadays. The reason for this is it meant you didn't have to carry a spare for the van as well. As we found out in the early 70's second hand vans are any bodies guess unless you knew the original purchaser. We had a ford and when we got a flat we found our spare didn't fit. A bloke that came along not long after we found out had a holden and his fitted so we got to the next town and had it repaired. Its funny how you think back and wonder how we managed to get around. We never did get a spare but luckily never needed it in the next 5 years. Our 74 millard has o1 though as the patrol rims don't quite fit Pete

G'day Julie,
The Viscount "Valiant" model got a C-series chassis number, which started in about 1969. Your number of C5533 would be from around 1971, depending on how many Valiants they actually built after 1969 (no-one here would know that).

Chassis number A1888 is from around 1967. It depends on what the painted design looks like on the sides of the van. Got a photo??

Hi there, just found this site and was wondering what year model my old viscount is? The number on the chassis is A10299 and has a duralvan sticker on it. The paint work is very faded but appears to be original.

G'day Nigel, I think your chassis number is getting up near the point where Viscount switched the numbering system and put the 'A' at the end of the numbers. That was in 1971, so you're probably looking at your van being from 1970.
cheers, Al.
