Hey Ted,
Yeh the bottom position is definitely better when towing.
I test towed it yesterday, only for about 100km but it was better. Almost as good as It was before. I am happy & comfortable with my set-up.
Yep the clearance over the footpath/driveway is just good enough so I'm happy about that as well.
Also, I noticed that the tail lights are a little more visible which should keep the Hi-way Patrol happy lol.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing and if I knew anything about engineering and design (and taking accurate measurements) I would have had the frame made smaller in the first place, in order to achieve this position and of course - less mass = less weight and less cost.
Anyway - this info may help you out.
Cheers, Des

Thanks Des. I now need to get a couple of brackets welded on to the rear bumper and some new wheels. I've worked out how to mount them so it looks good and balances the weight out 'cause I've now got two gas cylinders on the front and I can put an annex pole tube where the spare used to go on the front draw bar.
I've decided to get it weighed --- overall weight and ball weight 1) when the cupboards are in with one gas cylinder and the spare on the front. 2) with the rollout awning, 2 x gas cylinders (full), annex pole tube and 2 x rear mounted spares.
then I can play around with things as necessary 'cause i'll weigh each item as I mount them to the van.
Regards Ted

Hi Ted,
Sounds like you've put a lot of thought into it mate - sounds good - I may do something similar myself.
The Tare on the VIC Roads Rego Papers when I bought my EGG was 950kg but there was no 'Gross' and I do not know what 'Tare' for a Caravan includes eg; gas bottle, fridge, annex, spare wheels, jockey wheel, tools etc.
When I Rego'ed it in the ACT they decided to give me a Gross of 1200kg but I don't know how accurate that is or if it was just a guess by the guy on the day.
Anyway - I'll keep looking for the info.
Looking forward to seeing your result.
Cheers, Des

My van is lighter than yours as it only has one axil and your GVM is more for the same reason --- Tare 890kg, GVM 1100kg. I would guess that the tare weight includes everything that's fixed to the van - gas bottle, fridge, stove, spare wheels, cupboards etc. I don't think that the jockey wheel, tools and annex are included in the Tare weight as they are extras when towing - they would be included to the GVM as well as clothing, bedding and crockery, or in the CVM if stored in the TUG (as I tend to do to lighten the load in the caravan). Thanks for the info Ted,
Yeh the difference in the weights makes sense with the different number of axels.
I hadn't considered the CVM at all but I will now.
Cheers, Des

Giday Des,
Looks great inside --- Original. A few differences to my original van. Only thing I'm not keen about is the bed against the wall but that's only 'cause I'm the one who has to climb over.

G'day Ted,
Yeh I know what you mean about climbing over but a previous owner did that mod. It looks like the only mod from the original layout. She's all insured now so that's a relief.
We are off to Rainbow Beach for Australia Day today. will probably stay a week or so.
Your van looks great and I'm guessing you first trip went well??
Cheers, Des

Hello All, Apologies for the delay in posting the following pics. They are of our view on Australia Day at Rainbow beach QLD and our decorated Franklin 'EGG' - so please enjoy. It was a great 10 day break at a beautiful seaside spot - highly recommend it to all. Cheers, Des

Great photos, Des! Have added Rainbow Beach to the list of places I must get to one day. Looks like the tough part won't be actually getting there - it will be trying to leave when the time comes! cheers, Al.

Love the spare wheel mounts personally recon the best place to put them is on the rear bumper. But please be aware of your towball weights too much weight on the tail end could turn your van into something scary to tow.

Thanks for the advice guys,
Yep it is hard to leave but we live fairly close so I guess it's easier when we know we can come back without to much trouble.
So far - touch wood - the trials on the spare wheels have gone well and the CC tows very well so I am happy so far.
Cheers, Des
