Picked the van up about ten years ago had been an on sight at a park some ware It was pretty wrecked inside and out. We did a bit of a tidy up back then and used it as a onsight van for a few years then moved it to our place in wyalkatchem where it was used as a spare room Well time is nealy apon us to go travelling and shocked at the.price of modern vans we have decided to fully restore the royal

The wrap around windows are a crap setup. After rebuilding mine on the front I will say real stupid design although they do let in good light. I would suggest fill in the side sections and mount the window to a new frame made central to the hole and just alloy sheet the side sections simular to the ambassador model. Less chance of leaks and easier to do. Looks like you have some work to do inside the old girl. It felt like I spent half my life in my old girl getting her rebuilt. But I am very happy with the result

Thanks supreme 78 The windows are going to be a pain but I want to keep the exterior looking original . The inside will be modern with a shower but that is a way off yet. Next job is to replace the z channel that is rusted out and clean the chassis up . Thinking of strengthening the chassis so I can take it off the bitumen . One of the side windows is missing so will have to try and source one or replace with a modern one .looking at the condition of the windows it may be easer to replace them all

Yeah windows are pretty cheep in the grand scheme of things. And proper sealing windows will make the van much more comfy for sure. I have added 75x50 rhs under my van from the front to past centre. I added a piece 2 m long from the draw bar rear fixing point along side the current rail the springs mount to rearward and it's a metre short of the end of the total chassis. I will add a couple pics when I can get under it again. I am fitting new springs soon and they will include the new added rail section for added stability and strength. I never know where I might want to take the old girl so built her tough to take it.

Regarding strengthening the chassis can anyone see a problem with making a new heavy duty chassis and attaching the caravan old chassis and all to the new one.i am also thinking of of attaching the old to new using rubber mounts similar to how a 4wd body is attached to the chassis.I understand this will ad a fair bit of weight but could give the option of using inderpendent suspention. Here is the suspention I built for our camper and it has done some serious off road work

On this forum there are discussion about this very thing somewhere. I would suggest you mount the chassis direct to the original chassis for strength then you don't need to make the new one as strong as the 2 will work together as one. Also remember the stronger you build the undercarriage the more strength you need inside also. The weight is something to think of for sure. I have seen vans where they just build a new chassis and replace the old one.lift the van of and onto new chassis.

Well got the rusted z channel out today. Removed the lower cladding of the left side will need to get some z bent up this week and also need to replace some of the aluminium frame work as it is badly corroded. i think I will remove the cladding and rebuild from the inside out as it was originally
