Firstly I would like to say "what a great forum". So many people with so much experience. Now, hopefully I can draw on some of that invaluable knowledge. I have just acquired a Viscount Ambassador Chassis number 5368E (I assume from what I have read here, it's about a 71 model) as seen in my avatar. It's going to be a full interior renovation as it was pretty dilapidated inside. (pics to come later). I have started by stripping what was left and exposed the exterior skin. In doing so I have discovered the plastic wheel arches are completely decayed. Also, the roof hatch is missing along with the winding mechanisms. Any hints or help on where to acquire such rare items would be greatly appreciated. In the mean time, I'll try and work out how to attach some pics.

nice acquisition! Is it a 15 footer? Pretty much exactly the size/model van I am after. Will be watching your progress on this one. I wish I was handy enough to tackle a job like this. My handywork will be limited to a good clean/detail! haha

G'day noeyedeer, I must be getting old. Somehow your post has slipped by without me noticing it, but thanks to other members, I'm onto it now. I've changed the heading, and relocated your thread over to the Hall Of Fame section, so you can keep us entertained as you work your way through the project. Looks to me like you've only got a couple of hours work to have it all ship-shape, heh heh. cheers, Al.

Hi noeyedeer, my name is Karen and I'm currently renovating a 1978 Viscount Supreme S88038. I had to reline some walls which was more than I bargained on when I bought it but I am pleased and relieved to say I've got it done and I'm now onto the interior painting. Still have to rebuild all the cabinetry, fix the ceiling, remake corner windows, paint the exterior etc etc so a long way to go but I'm actual ly enjoying the process once I've found it's not really that scary! I will be watching your renovation with interest

Gidday Andrew, A carton of beer was probably a little steep for this one but, after all I am a generous bloke. It is going to take a little more than a good clean and detail and I am yet to see if my handywork will be good enough to tackle such a job. As far as the size goes, that depends on where you want to measure it from. The inside is 13' and the outside was 15' 6" however I have cut off the old drawbar and manufactured a longer/stronger one so now it's actually 17'5". Stay tuned Regards Dave

Hi Al, Thanks for putting me in my place. You're right. A couple of hours grinding, cutting, painting, welding, wiring, woodworking and spending a couple of hundred bucks and she'll be as good as new. . . . HA HA! I wish. lol. I went through some receipts a couple of days ago and we have already outlaid 1600 dollars. The sad thing is, the seems to be less van now than when I picked it up. How the hell did that happen? ?? When I work out how I first posted these pics, I'll add the new ones to this post. I look forward to entertaining anyone who's interested. Regards Dave

Mate I stopped adding up the costs after 1year into my rebuild. But Truth be told what I have learnt from the rebuild was worth any cost.

Hi Karen, It does seem daunting to start with but once you get into it it's amazing what you can achieve on your own. I have never done a caravan reno before but my wife and I did rebuild a boat once. That seemed to be an impossible task and one that was going to take forever. Much to my surprise, I had it totally stripped, rebuilt and repainted in 6 weeks. We had the best of times in that boat and it was a sad day when we sold it. I too have to rebuild all the cabinetry. I have managed to purchase a 3 way fridge and a 4 burner cooktop with grill. The walls and ceiling will be lined with 'Composite' (low density polyethylene coated with a thin layer of aluminium). I'm not expecting to get out of this one for under 5 grand. Stay tuned Regards Dave

Nope! No workshop. I just had it at work for a few days rubbing it back.

Still envious. I did all of mine out in the back yard with a tarp. A flat surface and a roof would have come in handy. Maybe on the next one

Hey Andrew, The van has sat stagnant for a while now. I'm busy finishing off the house reno first. I'll be sure to post some new pics as I make some progress. Dave
