I finally got back to attempting to repair my leaking roof over the last couple of days. Decided while I was up there, I would repair not only the offending seam, but a couple of others that were looking suspect. Scraped out the old sealant with a plastic paint scraper and chiselled it out, a little bit of finger nail here and there helped too. After removing as much of the old sealant as I could, I gave it a good wipe down with turps, then primer prep solvent to get rid of as much dirt and grease as I could. I then laid down a line of masking tape to contain the mess, and applied the sealant. Then used another plastic scraper to screed off the surplus, and then removed the tape. Images below ... well ... I think it looks pretty neat - but only time will tell if it keeps the water out I guess. Twas a grey old day in Melbourne today ... so not much contrast in the images. You can see the poor condition of the paint on the roof in these photos, but I just dont have the ability to repaint at the moment ... In the photos you can also see some self tappers that have been used. This was done by Capricorn (well ... by Judd & Innes) who sold my father the van - and it leaked in these seams about 3 months after he took delivery. I can only guess they are trying to pull the seam together tighter to form a better seal. Well ... lets face it ... it lasted 40 years I guess. Here's hoping ... Glenn.
