Hi all, we have recently become owners of our first van, a 1976 14ft Millard pop top. (prior to this we were tenting people...) The shelves in the Tuomatic fridge are pretty dodgy (rusty & losing their plastic coating) & could do with being replaced. Does anyone have any idea as to where we should start looking? or does anyone happen to have them laying around that perhaps they dont want/need anymore?? haha... I would be tempted to pull the old fridge out & put in our "camping" bar fridge, however it would involve re-designing the kitchen sink/bench... (and from my research the van fridges are designed to cope with the flexing of the van, and normal bar fridges are not... or is this an old wives tale??) hope someone can help!

Hey there, Maybe you could try making some out of 6mm perspex, You would just need to measure the existing shelves and cut the perspex to fit. I would also recommend drilling small holes through the perspex to help with air circulation around the fridge. You can find cheaper perspex on evil bay. Or you could remove the plastic coating give them a good scrub with a wire brush and steel wool and give them a lick of rust paint. You can find it in a spray can or tin and this would be cheaper than replacing with perspex. Your bar fridge would be okay to use also, many people are opting to use house fridges in their caravans. But from my very limited experience once you start redesigning and removing, you never stop till you have nothing left. my caravan [/img] Jai Attachments:

G'day oldmilly76, Depending on whereabouts you live, one option might be to contact your nearest fridge repairer or service shop for caravan fridges (or even household fridges). You might be lucky and they have a stash of old "dead" fridges in the backyard that you could get the shelves from. It would all depend on the size(s) of your shelves, and whether there was anything lying around that matched your size and was in better nick than yours. Another long-shot might be the shelves used in old stoves or ovens, particularly if they are small appliances. There might be something there that matches your fridge shelf size. And like Jai says above, a can of silver spray is a cheap way of sprucing them up for a couple of years. cheers, Al.
