G'day ruby6689, Good to hear you are making steady progress. These damn vans will take over your life if you let them, so doing a bit here and there when time permits is a good way to save your sanity (well...maybe not a good way, but it helps. The only 'good' way to save your sanity is to not start in the first place, heh heh. ). A photograph or two of your progress would be interesting to see (hint, hint). We get enormous enjoyment out of seeing other people suffer err...I mean, weave some magic with these old vans. cheers, Al.

G'day ruby6689, As you can see, I've changed the title of your thread, and moved the thread over here into the Hall Of Fame section, where it rightfully belongs. Good on you for sorting out the photo size. The larger ones can be a pain in the butt for those on slow internet connections. I like the fabric pattern you've chosen. It reminds me of some axminster carpet I had laid in a house I bought back in the 1970s. Can't buy those sorts of patterns easily anymore, so you've done well to track some down. Seems like things are coming together nicely for you. Keep putting those photos up so we can enjoy the ride with you. cheers, Al.

Thank you for moving the thread to the appropriate section.
I was a bit embarrassed about the size of those first photos, new computer. I'm a moderator on the KombiClub forum and large photos are one of my pet hates.
The axminster carpet brings back a lot of memories for me, Mum's house was covered in it, different patterns in every room ;D
I'll keep the pics coming.

Well it's been a while, but we are getting closer to the day Mildred will be coming out of her corner of the garage and be proudly towed to her first outing.
The interior is all but finished, boy I had no idea how fiddly it would be painting her but it's now done ;D. I am having a ball, ebay and op shops have been a wonderful source for the decorations along with Mum's cupboards. Still a bit to go and I will post pics.
We have been in the divorce courts (garage) every spare minute and after hours of 'discussion' and endless doodling on her exterior walls we finally agreed on the design. I drew inspiration from hours of scanning the web and magazines but I knew it had to tie in with our kombis so a 'splittie' front end seemed to be the right look that we were after. This is her 'in the nude' with her hundreds of blemishes now filled and sanded. The mouldings are still to be sanded but you can get some idea of what the finished look will be.
Her colours will be a mix to blend with her kombis. I am nervous but excited and can't wait to start painting her.

awesome work ruby6689, love the v trim on the front, very VW. I know what you mean about the kombis, much as I love mine and drive it every day, we just wanted something different, we are members of the KK too. Our Katy has filled that gap for the time being - although Alex is already talking about getting a small van to tow behind our Kombi!!! Our neighbour has just bought his third vintage van!!!! It is obviously a problem!!! lol Have fun with your Mildred and keep posting lots of photos. By the way I had the same problem with photo size and was also embarressed about the size - all sorted now. regards Jean

Hey there Ruby, What a beaut little van you have there, It sure will look great behind one of the V Dubs. I can only wonder what I could put in a shed like you lucky people have, ;D the mind would go into over-drive. I hope you have the caravan well insured before you take it out, it would really ruin Xmas if something was to happen to it after all that great work. Cheers kiwijim ;D

Cheers kiwijim ;D VW's have been a bit of an obsession for us for a few years now, but I must say we have really enjoyed this latest project and find ourselves scanning every paddock looking for that next project. Andy took me for a drive the other day to show me a couple he had spotted closeby. One is a carapark, darn ugly horse trailer style (my opinion only) but interesting. I know the owners so I might just have a word in their ear next time I see them in town.
Mildred has been insured from the day we got her. Shannons are now doing caravans. They know our Kombis and were happy to cover her for $10,000. I really have no idea of her value, this may be too high???
We need to sort out tow vehicles, we had to borrow a friends 4x4 to tow her back up our steep gravel driveway We hope to have a special bar made to fit the Ute, his dual exhast and the fact that it is lowered is problem. That's our next job!

We finally see the end result, Monty towing Mildred!
We took them to the VW Spectacular at Valla a couple of weeks ago, this is the biggest VW show in Australia and happens bi-annually. There were 504 VW's registered and only the top 10 get awarded trophies. Monty took out one of these for the second time running, so we were pretty proud owners.Attachments:

Well done ruby, and congratulations on your well-deserved trophy! You say this event happens every two years? Hmmm, that explains all the VW's we saw heading that way back in 2010 when we were coming back home from a Vintage caravan event in Qld. Heaps and heaps of them all along the highway. Is the event held in Valla Park? I think there's also a hot rod event held there as well? Seems to be a pretty popular venue for the car enthusiasts. I remember going to Valla Park way back in 1976, just a few years after it opened at Xmas 1973. I think it was the first "holiday park" developed in Australia at the time (I may stand corrected on that), and catered for families, with heaps of activities for children and adults to participate in. There was never a dull moment in the whole time we spent there. The whole development cost $2 million, which would have been a tidy sum back at the time. We called in there on our way back home last year, and it's only a shadow of its former self, as far as the "holiday activity" side of it goes. Most of the original infrastructure has been abandoned, and is rusting or crumbling away. However, there's plenty of those manufactured cabins spread around the place nowadays. Just for interest, here's a newspaper advertisement from August 1973, just a few months before it opened... Somewhere I've got the ol' photo slides of the kids riding ponies at the park when they were only ankle-biters. Ah...memories... cheers, Al.
