Tom, No it is not legal to use a normal (household type) power point in a caravan. They have to double pole double switched, which means that both the active and the neutral sides of the power point have to be disconnected by the internal switch when turned off. If you have a look at Caravans plus they have a good range of the correct (legal for caravans) power points and some are not too bad in price, but you have to remember you get what you pay for. I went for the cheaper ones as they are only used a few times a year, and should last a number of years before something goes wrong, I also got a couple of spares just in case, the caravan ones are not like some in the house that are constantly turned on and off.
Hope this helps, there are a number of posts about this type of electrical question.

G'day arms, Sometimes you can get good value from ebay listings for double pole stuff. Somebody has listed a box of 8 double points for $45 buy-it-now, plus $15 postage, which works out to be $7.50 per power point - a pretty good price. Click here for the listing. You can also see the full ebay listings for double pole stuff by clicking here. Scroll down through all the items and you'll see the various offerings available. The deep mount type of point is handy where you have more than two sets of wires going to the back of the point. You get a bit more room to put all the wires into the terminals, otherwise you have to buy the mounts to fit behind the standard flush power points if you use the flush type. Compare ebay prices with those listed on the CaravansPlus website and you can save dollars by going with the cheaper seller. cheers, Al.

Great - I'm glad I saw this as I've just installed a household type point in my van. I'll swap it over for a double pole type one. Just purchased this one for around $15 delivered.

We installed household ones that we liked but changed the switch to DPST. Didn't know where to go to get them so off to the local caravan spares who promptly sold me three Camec brand switches at $28 each.... only to find exactly the same ones online for around $7 each once I knew what I was looking for. Guess I won't be going back there again.
