Hi everyone!
We are the proud owners of "Winnie" a 1970 Viscount Ambassador (what we were told ) . We love her and want to keep/restore her to original condition. We have never owned a caravan before and don't even know where to start ha ha!! She is in pretty good nick but has had a fair bit of water damage and needs a general clean up. Most of the water damage came through the roof hatch which seems pretty common for this type of van but looks like the water has run down the corners of the van. We have removed the hatch and rotten ply wood around it, she is covered with a tarp. We plan to cut a new piece of ply and maybe get a new steel cover made up by a sheet metal fabricator, has anyone done this before?
We also seem to be missing the hatch winding handle and the plastic piece that is fixed to the van is broken, it would be great to hear where people have found these items, if at all!!! Has anyone made a replacement from other materials?
SO it looks like the van has not been resealed EVER! We have chipping away at removing the old sealant. Do you think it is necessary to seal along ALL of the aluminium strip around the edges of the van? Will the sealant look bad next to the aluminium?
You will all probably cringe at this but I wanted to clean up all of the aluminium on the van, the stuff on the inside of the van has pretty bad aluminium oxidation, so i took to it with a light sandpaper and then rubbed it with a polish, it came up shinny!!!!! Im pretty sure it is meant to be kind of dull white ish, brushed look!! I have only done a small patch but would love some advice on removing the oxidation and looking after the aluminium??
There is a strip of foam that runs in-between the window and window frame that has deteriorated, I have had a look at two products at Bunnings, one is a similar grey foam and the other is a rubber seal. Should I stick with the foam?
Sorry for all of the questions, I have about 100 more ha ha
Would be grateful for any advice, thanks in advance!!
Elisa and Rhys
