G` day to all, New to this site and hoping for some help with the new trimatic lock I have installed. I have fitted this to the screen and outer doors. When the door is closed it does not latch shut. The door can just be pulled back open without pressing the button on the outside (or inside) or the release on this inside. Thanks in advance for any advice with this.

G'day didge1969, and welcome to the forum! Sounds to me like it can be one of only two things... 1) the striker plate is set too far back in the door frame, and the gear wheel is not engaging in the striker plate properly, or.. 2) there's a fault in the gear wheel in the lock itself. The gear wheel moves freely in one direction only when you've got your finger off the push button. It should move freely to allow the door to close, but not freely to allow the door to open. There's a plastic flapper plate inside the lock housing, and another corresponding gear wheel inside there as well. The flapper plate stops the gear wheel moving unless the door button is pushed. First you have to check the lock: Open the door and take your finger off the push button. Then try to turn the outer gear wheel with your fingers. Does the outer gear wheel lock in position when you try to turn the gear wheel one way, but spins freely if you turn it the other way. If "Yes, it locks in position one way", then the problem is the position of the striker plate on the door frame. If "No, it spins freely both ways" then the problem is in the lock itself. Do a test, and tell me what you find... cheers, Al.

Thank you so much Al for this info. I have made phone calls without any help whatsoever. This lock was bought "new" (I have my doubts I think that its been "refurbished", as paint is coming off it already). The wheel does move freely both ways, just like the old one I removed. The outside button only pushes in about half way and becomes too hard to push, as does the inside latch, which really doesn`t move too much at all. I enlarged the centre hole to give extra room for the button mechanism to move freely, this made no difference. I have contacted the ebay seller who has assured me he`d refund my purchase price if it was faulty. From what you have said I think it is. That`s what i couldn`t understand that this wheel didn`t lock into place until you push either the inside or outside mechanisms to release the door.

Yeah, sounds like you've got a dud lock. The plastic flapper plate is probably broken inside the lock. Here's a couple of photos to show you what the guts of the rear half of the lock looks like. I've added some text to the photo, which makes it look a bit complicated, but take your time looking at it and you'll get the idea... They aren't a bad lock when they're working properly, and the old ones can be refurbished with new grease and work like a charm again (as long as there's no broken parts, obviously ). New Trimatic locks are available from CaravansPlus (click here ), but only in black these days. cheers, Al.

Thanks so much again Al for your responses and help with this. Yes the wheel does free-wheel in both directions and as I said I suspect it is "refurbished" . And not very well. It cost me $80 from rv.gear on eBay. I phoned their number a couple of days ago and he returned my call but could offer no insight as to the workings of it or a possible solution. He did offer a refund however if it was faulty. Which it has to be from what you tell me.
Thanks again great site and excellent help.
Craig.

Sorry for the gravedig, but I just bought a new one and fitted it. I closed the door to adjust the striker, and now the button won't push in (with the key in either position). M caravan has the lights on, and I can't open the door lol... Any advise?
