G'day All, Our sister forum for Vintage caravans holds a National gathering every two years, and the next one is due in late April/early May next year (2014). While the main aim of the Nationals is for like-minded people to gather together with their vintage caravans, an invitation has been extended for Classic caravan owners to also attend. The 2014 venue will be a caravan park in Broken Hill, NSW. The gathering runs for 5 days, starting Monday 28 April, to Friday 2 May, which allows the weekend before and after for people to travel at least some of the way from home and back. If you think you'd be interested in attending the Nationals and want to put your name on a list of people likely to attend, send me a Personal Message with the number of people likely to attend in your van, and I'll pass on your details to the organiser. Bookings in the caravan park can NOT be taken at the moment because it's still too early for their booking system. The park has 135 powered sites, with the possibility of more coming on line over the next year, or alternatively there will be plenty of non-powered sites. And just by-the-by, we attended the Nationals that were held in Mildura 2010, and the last one in Cowra 2012, and had a great time in our '77 Millard poptop. Hopefully people from far and wide in WA and Qld and Tassie can make it to the next one. There is a thread on the Vintage Caravans forum which tells you more about the planning for the event: 2014 VINTAGE CARAVANS NATIONALScheers, Al. ps. anybody who has already sent me a PM about attending has had their details forwarded to the organiser (I'm looking at you, Canberra )

Broken Hill is a great place for a national gathering - it is a really interesting town. Went there for a holiday about 10 years ago, and loved it so much have been back twice since. It is a bit of a drive from most places but worth it. Just avoid the road from Mildura after dusk due to the roos.
Cheers Remaim

Gday Al, We've been talking about this for some time now, & would just like to make it a definite maybe that we will go to these "Vintage" Nationals in Broken Hill next year. Seriously, we're not concerned that we still haven't booked at this stage even though the Vintage vanners have virtually booked almost 100 last time I checked. We're happy to go without power if that's what we end up with. We have quite a few matters to sort out in the next few months. Solar panels will serve us well. Still have to service the electric brakes (again), cos we've been doing a lot of traveling! There's also some tricky stuff to finish with the fridge, but I think we'll have it all under control by Anzac Day next year (2014). So this is just a statement of intention to go... It now starts us on the big C path: Commitment! Or is it Cheers! mike

Let's hope you can make it, mike.
And equally importantly, let's hope I can make it too. Still 5 months to go and a lot to be done to the vintage caravan I'm working on at the moment.
cheers, Al.

Sounds interesting! We have three young children who will then be 6.5, 3.5, and 18mths. Does anyone know if other families will be attending?

Gday cliffy, No, haven't booked on the Vintage Van Forum. We rarely book anywhere we go. We've always found a site: we're not looking for a powered site necessarily, because we're set up for non-powered sites. We don't really book because we find we change our minds, or it is changed for us by other events. I remember we had intended to go to Cairns one year, when that cyclone Larry changed our minds. Thanks for alerting me to that cut-off date 31/01/14! Wasn't aware there was one: shows a level of casualness that could get us in trouble. I'll get right on the case tonight while watching the T20 in Hobart on TV. Long way to go to find out we can't get near the place for huge numbers of Vintage (and some Classic) vans. Thanks again mate. Cheers mike

G'day Mike,
When the Nationals first started to be talked about 12 months ago, the caravan park in BH said they would basically hand over the whole park for the Vintage Nationals. Lots of people said they would go...and then a fair few people said that no, they wouldn't be able to make it after all. Lots of bookings, and then some cancellations. In the meantime, the caravan park was being hassled by other members of the public for sites so that people could attend the big Agfair event that's on in Broken Hill on the 2-3 May this year, at the end of the Vintage week.
Needless to say, the caravan park won't be stuffing around with Vintage people taking time to make up their minds about confirming their bookings. The deadline is 31st Jan, and after that all remaining unbooked sites will be allocated to other members of the public for the Agfair event. If you don't book, chances are Broken Hill will be chockers and you'll miss out. Apparently about 10,000 people attend the Agfair event, so the internet says.
cheers, Al.

Gday Al,
Looks like we've got Buckley's chance of getting in. I've also checked out the VV site since last post, and I see what you mean.
Please ignore that PM I sent earlier. It was sent in ignorance of the full facts.
We'll re-route ourselves as we have done in the past.
Cheers mike

Hi all. I was wondering if anyone was attending the vintage caravan rally? I was interested in going to see some of the old vans and talk to lovers of fine vans. I am from Vic and will be traveling up in my 1978 viscount and free camping somewhere near for a few days. Anyone going and like to catch up along the way I would like to be involved Regards Paul

Hi there classic vanners, Anyone not able to book a spot in Broken Hill for the nationals might like to head out to Silverton. You can camp at Penrose park, which is on about 34 hectares of natural bush. They have powered sites which are dotted around the park, toilet blocks an showers. My husband and I have camped here several times over the years and it is one of our favourite camping spots. Penrose park is a gem of a spot, natural bush setting, plenty of space, peace and quiet. And at the end of a busy sight seeing day, take a couple of minutes walk to the famous Silverton pub for a quiet drink. Hope to see you there,Graham and Margaret Adelaide. Penrose Park phone number is (08)80885307
