Hi Atog and Banno & Joey,
We talked about Olympic Hatches in the Hall Of Fame section but I thought it might be better sited here as I have a few photos to show of the support mechanisms of my fibreglass hatch. As earlier discussed my hatch is ribbed on top but is only a single skin. It is quite light but still strong. The mechanism looks rather light but has survived many years of being towed all around Australia from above Townsville in Qld to Geraldton in WA.
Looking forward with the full width flyscreen closed. Winder and gear drives are above the screens. The Stainless Steel curtain rod in the foreground holds a lightweight curtain which can screen the rear bedroom section of the caravan from the front at any time.
Same view but with insect screen partially opened. Winder and gear drives are shown.
Passengers side gear drive in closed position
Front of hatch slightly opened.
Front of hatch opened about 80%. Top of curved gear piece is pivoted only at fixing to hatch. Insect screen can be closed at all positions of hatch or gear drive. You can see the cross shaft and central winder more clearly here.
Rear of hatch at half open position. Note top of gear drive at rear fixings to hatch are able to slide, they are not fixed at the top.
Closer view of central winder. This has a friction action to turn the cross shaft to the side gear drives so that the mechanisms are not overloaded. On some occasions I have needed to push on the hatch as I turn the winder to help the gear mechanism lift the hatch. It is much easier coming down to close.
Hope this helps.
Cheers, techron
